I've just about got all my parts for a 406 build. But the one thing I am having alot of trouble with is picking out the cam. Here's what I have so far: 406 .030 over decked to .004, 6" rods, 4340 crank, -20cc pro-tru pistons, AFR 195 64cc heads, .041 head gasket, Vic Jr., 750DP
TCI superstreet fighter convertor, 4.10, 26"tire, TH-350, 3200lb.car. The compression works out to be about 9.85 to 1. My choices are:
Comp XS282S 282/288 244/252 .520/.540 110LSA
Isky Z-27 282/282 247/247 .541/.541 1.6rocker 108
Lunati 280/284 247/251 .530/.535 110 LSA
Also open to other suggestions. Weekend car with 10-15 track trips a year.
Thank You
Larry......

i would be thinking the 294s or 306s comp cams, the 294s wil work with power brakes also, not to sure about the 306 though

I would think a 26" tire would be a little short with a 4.10 gear and a 3200# car. You'll have to buzz close to 7000 to get to 120, and I don't think that's good for longevity.

I would look into the 280/284F10 from Lunati / UDHarold, thats the same cam that I have.

I talk intensively to UDHarold before picking that cam and he assured me that it will have tons of low end and mid tq. You should not have a problem w/power brakes.
This is from UDHarold Brookshire: 159/162 at .200, Beats the Comp Cam 294S hands down. Pro-Street power with an extra 5* at .200"
2500-7000 RPM, Advance Cam 4* Degrees,
Hope this help:

I like the looks of that lunati. Thats almost the same cam i had in my 406 with AFR 220s mine was a crower 282/290 248/252 .507 .528 112lsa. It ran mid 11s with not enough converter. Mt slicks 28x9s with 4.10 gears crossed the line at 6200 11.48 at 120 was the best pass off the bottle

I'd think about the Z-25 Isky cam (278Âş). It better matches the rpm capabilities of a 3.75" stroke and the CR you have. Install it 4Âş advanced. Both Isky's are larger than the cam card says since they have .018" lash and are speced at .020". They should be speced at .016". This means the valve is already off the seat at .020".

Since the longer stroke of the 400 doesn't like high rpm, taller tires might be a good idea.

I don't have to worry about power brakes and yeah I'll probably have to change the tire or gear..works good for my current 327. I am currently running 12.6 with my 327 and want to get into the 11's. Hard to get enough lift out of the Z-25 cam even with 1.6's

The Lunati should give you the lift you are looking for:

Another question I would have is, since my AFR heads are supposed to be good until .550 lift, can I run let's say, the lunati with .560 lift with 1.6 rockers, and minus the lash out, to get to under .550? And, would I just be better off going with a hydralic roller..? I am trying to build a fast pump gas car.

Thanks Again.
