Just wondering what kind of power is possible with ported 049 heads, 2.19/1.88 valves on a 468. My project is a long way from being completed so looking for a set of rectangular ports is still an option if I can't meet my goals with the oval ports. I'm hoping for an honest 500HP. Bob

Hey BadBob...........049's are what you want. My combo made 490 HP and 500+ torque on the engine dyno with bone STOCK 049's. No porting, no bigger valves. I did have them angle milled to bump up the compression to make use of existing forged pistons. With larger valves installed and pocket port they will support 600 HP easy. I have since had the heads reworked, larger valves installed, but no dyno numbers to measure performance increase over stock. Stick with the ovals unless your gonna build a light, high reving RACE car!!!!

A good set of 049s will make 600+ hp. A good bowl job and a set of 2.19/1.88 valves should give them the flow to produce 500+ hp. My friend has a street driven 10:1 502 with 049 heads that made 625hp with a big hyd roller and a single plane. IMO set the heads up well and match a good intake and cam together and it should be no problem. The cam will have to be pretty radical, probably in the 240-250 range @50 and a good intake like a performer rpm is needed, but it is do-able.

Well that's cool, I'll stick with the heads then. So far I've picked up the following parts- SRP pistons should get me about 10-1 compression, Eagle 4340 4" crank and H beam rods, RPM air gap intake, 950 HP carb, 1 7/8" primary Stahl headers, Big shot 200-400 NOS plate system.

The heads are setup with a 5 angle valve job, Eaton stainless valves and the bowls were blended. A friend of mine is doing some light work on the ports.

Cam is undetermined yet, solid roller was my first thought and the heads were done up with roller springs with 200lbs at 1.95" installed height. I may change that idea and run a solid flat tappet cam though.

The trans will be a TKO-600 as soon as I sell my Muncies and other parts I don't need. Ford nine inch rearend. Hope I end up with a drivable combo that's capable of low to mid 11's.

With similiar heads (781)

I made 645hp with an XR292R comp streetroller. My friend made 610hp with a 288R streetroller.

This was non ported polished heads. Just 2.19/1.88 valves cut and bowls.

I have a dumb question - something I'm particularly good at!

I just took a set of 049's off my '70 LS 5 block. I'm intending to replace them with a fresh set of 290's that I bought here and have been rovalled.

Here's the dumb question: Do stock 049's have oval ports on the intake side? Mine are rectangular on the intake and oval on the exhaust.

Thanks!

Andy

Hmmmmm, you looking to part with those Andy? I'm not in dire need, but had planned on using a rect port QJ mani on my distant future 496 build. Those "rectaled" 049s would save some work.I have a bare set, untouched, well except by BB Dave., if you'd prefer to swap for a virgin set that need a bit of work, guides I can see right away all need replaced.

Oh no! Now you've done it!! Talking about something like that in one of the Forums - not in the Classifieds!

I can see a Danube Blue '66 on the horizon now - lights flashing, siren blaring. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until Officer Crown catches up to us!! :D

I wonder if he'll go easy on us if we turn ourselves in??!! lol!! :D :D

Just kidding Mike!!

Andy

ps - Gene - Not yet. I'll PM you.

Just a thought. My bare 049s will be sitting for a while ALTHOUGH, I might have some work done this winter if one of our clients hits a slow spell. Guides and opening up the seats is all. No rush, no problem. No need to PM.
