I recently purchased a 1971 Chevelle which has the 350 motor and a Eddlebrock Performer (4) Carb. If I ease on the gas the car runs great, but if I give it gas as to pass another vehicle it begins to make a back fire sound out of the carb. I have noticed that when I let the car sit the fuel filter fills up, but when I return from driving or at an idle the fuel filter has very little fuel in it. I am guessing that the back firing sound I am hearing is due to the lack of fuel when I give it gas, but I am unsure so I am asking the question.
I have checked the Compression and that is good. I have also checked the valve hose from the carb to the distributor and there is suction.
Is this a bad fuel pump or does anyone have a better suggestion.
Thanks
Derek

I thought it was a timing problem so made sure the timing was set correctly. The carb was also adjusted. This helped the problem and it is running better than it had been, but I still have the back firing sound. Is there any explaination for the fuel filter being barely full when car is at idle?

timing should be set at 8 and I do have a clear plastic fuel filter so I should get rid of that and get a metal one?

Also there had been a leak in the intake manifold so it was re-sealed not leaking now, but the problem I described is still there. Replaced the distributer, now has an ACCELL on it. Like I said it runs good until I give it gas to accellerate fast.

get a fuel pressure regualtor, and choke it down to about 6 PSI.
those edelbrock carbs cant take much more than that, or they just dump raw fuel past the mains.
otherwise i'd say bad coil or condenser.

Derek;
Are you running a points or HEI distributor??...... If it's a HEI, do you have a full 12volt supply going to it.

Are you running a vacuum advance?? .......If so does it hold vacuum.

Did you take a vacuume check?? ...... check for leaks... hoses, carb/intake.

This question is for WEBFOOT....... Why get rid of the glass in-line fuel filter??, what is the disadvantage of using them over the enclosed metal type.

Well, glass doesn't like heat and isn't very impact resistant, at best if it breaks your car will die after spraying fuel everywhere, worst case, your car is on fire. It has happened. I'd actually feel a little safer with a plastic one, but metal is best.

Timing was 8 at idle? What cam are you running?

I'd actually feel a little safer with a plastic one.
I'd stick with the plastic filter at least until you get the problem solved. My El Camino kept doing that and thanks to the plastic filter I was able to see the crud that had broken loose in my fuel tank clogging the filter every couple of days. Cleaning the tank (67 model year) solved my problem but without the plastic filter where I could see the contaminated fuel, diagnostics may have been more time consuming. About the same price as the comparible metal ones and last about as long as well.
