A buddy of mine got into an arguement with me about prices of Chevelles. Back in the late 80's to early 90's, about 88-92, I said the typical nice big block SS chevelle regardless of year (66-72) was selling for about 10-15k. To put it into perspective, i'm talking about what a 30k car would be now. he says at that time prices were closer to 7-9k. I don't think they were that low at that time. So we decided to let it be settled on here. There is a steak dinner riding on this one.

I'm only sorry to say this because your a member and he's not, but he's correct. The line can't be drawn like that though, they break down by popularity, which isn't much different now then it was then. Late 80's he's on track and by the first wave of craze the prices had increased more to what you believe them to have been by 92. Big jump for 4 years.

Late 80's to early 90's, BB Chevelles were cheap.
I remember a 69 SS396 for sale at a dealer in late 1986 for $1800. Was all original car with 325hp and about 110K miles.

If you really want to see what they were selling for back then, just read thru a few old issues of Hemmings.

Here are a few cars I remember buying or passing on.
(1985) $6500 350/350 4 speed 1969 Corvette coupe
(1986) $4800 69 Monaco Orange SS396 325HP Auto
(1987) $4999 68 Ash Gold SS396 Auto
(1988) $11,000 68 True L78 Tons of documentation White 4 speed
(1993) $12,500 Fully Documented 1969 Z/28 Lemans Blue

I guess it would depend on the condition of the car. The ones I listed were all 9 out of 10 quality.

I think the prices you are thinking are closer to the late 90s.

To only be able to go back in time just 15 years............

I remember seeing a 66 SS in 1984 for $5K on consignment at a dealer. The dealer was laughing because he said he'd never sell it ever at that ridiculous price.... Of course, I was 17, so it might as well have been $50,000.

I think it depends on the area. Really nice cars around here were about 10-12, with the cream of the crop about 30-35. Anything over 5 was good enough to drive without being embarrased.

It depends on the exact cars too.

What a difference a decade (or two!) makes, huh? In '86 we laughed at a guy selling a '69 Camaro show car for $10K! If I knew then...

in about '88 i had a 68 camaro, plain janer i bought for $600 running and driving, but needing a fair bit of work. a local guy at the same time was selling a '69 camaro that was a nice straight car, nice paint, like an 8.5 out of 10, for $3500.
in the early 80's my '71 442 convertable was abandoned during a snow storm a bit north of denver, still running and driving. that was probably the bottom of the muscle car market.

Yea, in like 88, you could buy big block velles, camaros, even vettes all day long for around 5k. I remember there was a 67 corvette, high horse 427 convertible, ermine white with red interior that was on the market for months at 6500.

An interesting comparison is about the same time, a new nissan sentra was about 6500. Now a new nissan sentra goes for about 18k. The vette? add a few zeros.

right around 1990, I owned a 68 malibu with a dead 350 in it (spun a bearing doing about 120 on the way to work one day). I was working in a resturant and found a wallet with 5k in CASH in it. I had temporary visions of buying a 69 big block convertible camaro - and you could buy a CHERRY one for 5k then. I gave the money back. Wish I woulda bought the camaro (or chevelle for that matter) now.

I have conceded defeat. I thought for sure they were higher, talk about taking off in price in the last 15 years. I am buying my buddy a steak at the angus barn here in Raleigh. For those of you that have never been here, if you ever do, this is a steak place that is a must. On another note, I wonder if there are still people out there with old Chevelles sitting around in the yard that think they are still worth $700

If they don't have cable tv or internet, then yes !

Here's one for ya. My stepdad bought a 63 Corvette convertible for 3,000. He sold it in 89' for 4,000 and thought he got one over on the guy.

A couple years later the car was up at a local cruise with a 4 sale sign...

25K

I sold a 70 SS396 in October, 1988 for $15,000.00, then bought a totally original 71 LS5 for $5,500 and a one owner 69 396 car for $2,000.00. The 71 needed tlc but was rust free.

i find this post a little funny.i was going thru the glove box today of my 69 and found the bill of sale from when i bought the car.its date 5/28/86 and i payed $2000 for it.21 years ago to the month......:beers:
