I went on NHRAs site to check the S/S results in Atlanta and I don't see any Super Stock results at all. What's the deal? Do they not run S/S at all national events now? Stock eliminator is shown, but not S/S. Thanks.

Danny

A couple years ago, NHRA started leaving out one eliminator bracket at selected events. At some events Stock Elim isn't contested, and at others Super Stock, and yet others Comp. This happened to be an event that SS wasn't contested this year. They did it to help curtail overcrowding in the pits and "enhance" (per NHRA) the racers' experience who are competing at the events where their elim is contested. The Sportsman racers are being squeezed out of national events slowly but surely. Now there is a $250 fine if you oil down the track in a Sportsman class. If I were still racing I think this would be a good time to switch to IHRA or quit as some are doing.

Von, thanks for the info. I had no idea they had made this change. Obviously, I don't follow it very closely, but having ran SS years ago (SS/J), I check the results from time to time. I agree with Marty. They could leave the Pro classes out and it would suit me fine. I have to wonder though. Is there enough sponsorship money in the Pro ranks that they can eventually squeeze the sportsman classes out? That would be a sad day.

Danny, Evidently there is enough sponsorship money to squeeze out the Sportsmen at national events because they sure don't seem to care. Problem is the Pros are what most of the fans and TV wants. At the approx $250 current entry fee for Sportsmen classes at national events now you'd think they be a little more appreciative. I used to race Stock (B/SA) and remember the endless waits in staging lanes, poor pit locations, and just general jerking around. I got tired of it then and quit so I'm sure I couldn't deal with a lot more of it today.

Yes, I'll never forget the staging lanes. Here in the south in the middle of August the heat and humidity, those waits made you wonder why you did it. My SS/J (69 Camaro) ran 11.20s on a good day. Problem was the NHRA class index in the late 70s was 11.10 and quite frankly I couldn't run with the big dogs. I could go to an IHRA track and run off their 11.30 index and hang around a few rounds. My brother had a SS/IA and could run 3 or 4 tenths under the index and close to the record. It was fun but I think I enjoy driving and occassionally racing my Chevelle more. Thanks.

Yes I think I enjoy my Chevelles more too. At least we can go jump into one and take a drive almost any time instead of waiting for and sometimes travelling great distance to a drag event. Not to mention the expense. But nothing beats the push in the back, sounds, and sensations of a wheels up run down the 1/4 mile. Just too much waiting and not enough runs. My car would usually run under the index and won a couple class Wallys and one NHRA Div 3 points meet (Indy), but I could never run quite quick enough to win class or qualify for Stock Elim (always about one tenth slower than quickest in class) at the big one in my back yard, the US Nats. Quickest run ever was 11.28 at a fast track in cool air. Trying to catch up to the fast guys kept me spending money and freshening or building a new engine every winter. Got tired of spending all my money on racing. Chevelles are much more relaxing too, most of the time.

Actually at some of the races they were leaving out more than one class. At the Pontiac Excitement Nationals (National Trails near Columbus) which are, sadly no more, they left out Comp, Top Alcohol Dragster, and Top Alcohol Funny car. Of course we did get to sit through many rounds of 8.90, 9.90, and 10.90 electronics races.

Isn't it a joy to sit through those? I had a memorable time there at Columbus in '77. Was in the '77 Springs there and could barely run my index. Won one round of Stock and was told to tear down Sat night and they wanted to see a piston and rod. Tore down, passed, and quit working on it about Midnite. Finished it up Sun morn and promptly lost in the next round. Not a fun race for me.
