Anyone installed a cage in a 70 chevelle? How did you cut the floor to weld the bars to the frame? Where do the back struts go to? I would like to keep the back seat and still have a 8 point cage. I might add the struts that go into the engine compartment, but I know its not needed until I get into the 9s. THanks

I had a moly 6 point installed in my '70 last Jan. The rear points pass thru the package tray.
The back seat is still in the car but good luck trying to get back there and sit.
The installer used a plasma cutter to cut the 6 holes in the floor pan. Then after the bars were installed and welded, he made sheet metal patches to fit around the piping.

Thanks a lot. I was thinking of using a die grinder, but that would take a long time doing it that way. As for the back seat, I just wanted it to look more like a street car. Maybe my 15 month old son can squeeze back there.

I think I am going to practice first on this 70 Chevelle I got from a friend to go circle track with. I think we need an 8 point cage with some horizontal bars by the doors. Thanks again.

On my 70 I bought rear bars that are bent so they go through the package tray rather than through the seat area. I used a die grinder to cut the holes in the floor. I think adding the struts to the engine compartment would be more difficult with routing it through the firewall and dash area. I still have a rear seat, but as mentioned above, GOOD LUCK getting ito the back seat!

·Maybe use a hole saw? They often go up to bigger diameters, thats probably what Im going to use. A good hole saw made for steel would cut there these floors like butter.

Thank you everyone for your quick responses. I'll probably try to bend all the piping from a lengths of 10 feet. I'm happy I work at a shop with a pipe bender. Should be easy to custom bend the tubes for the circle tracker chevelle. I know I may get a lot of sh*t about beating up a chevelle on the dirt track. But this thing has no salvageable panels, I took all the glass and the interior has been in the rain for the last 8 years. I got this from a friend that pretty much abandoned it.

Aaron,
I would say around a 5" square hole. You'll need excess room to be able to completely weld the tubing to the frame.
