Does anyone know the correct factory width of the SS hood and trunk stripes on a 70 Chevelle. I do not have stencils and my paint guy is ready to paint them. thank you

scott,
I wouldn't do it without the stencils. There is a wide stripe and a smaller stripe that surrounds the larger one. The dimensions and proper centering are critical for a nice finish. You can order the stripe kit and have it within 3 days from our sponsor GU or NPD, Year one, etc.

If you own a GM assembly manual specific to the year of your car, there is a diagram showing the dimensions of the stripe placement. But, I do recommend Ed's advice....buy a stencil kit.

I'm going to be Mr. Contradictory here. It really depends on your paint guy. When my bro's 72 car went in for paint, the bodyman tried the stencil kit and decided it was junk. He ended up laying the stripes out by hand, and they look PERFECT. You see a lot of cars where the stripes come too far down on the hood, or are too rounded, etc. Like I say though, it depends on your paint guy, see what he's willing/ableto do.

Use the stencil! The stencil you purchase is not entirely complete nor does it really need to be. You still have to work the middle parts of it. The rear deck stencil has the lowerer rounded portion for the stripe curves, the hood stencil has the rounded forward part of the hood and another stencil the rear part of the domed hood. I too have seen stripes that are too rounded, too wide, too thin, etc. The stencil really makes your stripes look the way they are supposed to.

Be forwarned, in my asy. manual it shows the stripes stopping some 2 inches short of the chrome around the rear window. This is not the case as we all know. The stripes should extend all the way up to the rear window, under the chrome, just as on the hood.

That's great input! Since I used a stencil kit, I wouldn't have known about that minor problem with the assembly manual. Thanks!
