Well it's that time of year where I start gathering all my paperwork for federal taxes. I'm considering using computer software this year has anyone used Turbo Tax? if so how does the software work for you.

Rich.

I use a CPA. Costs about $275 for personal return. He always saves me more in tax than he charges. Turbo tax is good for simple returns but for anything half-way complicated I'd get a tax preparer. My dad uses it but spends hours just figuring out how to install and use the software. Its nice to just turn over the IRS notices, if you get them, to the preparer to deal with.

ive used it for probably 10 years..simple. the first time through takes a little more time, but after the first year, the program will automatically install all of your info from the previous year's tax return...then you can skim through and update whatever needs to be done.

i give it a thumbs up for my purposes, but my returns are pretty straightforward.

Same here. We have stocks, studen loans, house payments, retirement investments, write-offs, and most years multiple jobs (summer jobs as we are teachers) and have never had a problem. I think it is a simple program and as jtm sais it updates automatically every other year after that. I took our taxes to a H&R block once, a private Accountant (with the recomendation of a fellow teacher) and then I used my brother's brother in law. He did it as a favor (only charged $250 then told me it would be much better to use turbo tax or some other tax prep program, for someone who doesn't own a business, or has more than 500,000 in equity it isn't necessarily worth going to a tax preparer.

I`ve used it for the last 2 years and it`s been great. I use it at my in-laws house but like was said, all the old info is there for you. I`ll be using it again as soon as all my W2`s come in. My in-laws use it and they have a bunch of financial stuff to add into it and they love it.

I own a home, have some typical investments, make a few charitable contributions -- typical deductions; used Turbo tax for the last 8-9 years and never a problem. Before that I used H&R Block, for wich I paid a lot more for the same results. A coworker had been using a CPA for years and I handed him last year's Turbo Tax and challenged him to show that his CPA saved him any money in tax liability. He will be using Turbo Tax this year!

I use the deluxe versions for our personal incomes and the business for our S-Corp. It is truly very thorough, and simplistic. Very user friendly. Costs less than a CPA, and you don't have to share your info with anybody but the IRS. Can file electronically and even do loans against your expected returns if need be.

I've used TaxAct, pretty much the same as TurboTax except cheaper, for years. It seems pretty thorough, you can answer the questions that a paid preparer asks or you can answer the questions the computer asks. There's no magic to it, a preparer can't find deductions that don't exist.

I use the same program,...TaxAct. I've been using it for over 10 years. It is nice, easy to use and very inexpensive. I get their "deluxe version" every year with my state program attached to it. Costs under $20 for Fed and State combined. Imports all of prior years basic info.
You can see it here..... www.taxact.com
They have an online version and a downloadable program version. I always do the download and run it from my PC. If you don't want the download, you can have them send it to you on a CD.

I've done tax returns manually since the first time I needed to file a return (Tax year 1995). I use the IRS Publications when necessary to figure out how to calculate a particular line item. Just stuck in my ways I guess.

Used Turbo Tax one year to file a return for my mom and stepdad. They had rental losses, capital gains, dividends, typical stuff. Pretty easy really.

Deluxe version for $20 also includes a free federal e-file, pretty good deal.

I've used Turbo Tax for 3 years, and I love it. I spent a lot of time the first time because I was reading all the deduction info that the program has. After the first time it gets a lot easier and faster because it takes the info from the previous year and you just modify as necessary. I would recommend it to anyone.

I've used it for 3 years now and love it.........works well, easy to do, no software loading problems, you shouldn't have any problems.......Mike

Tired TT last year for the first time. Heck, it was the first time I have ever even tried to do taxes myself in the first place. cant complain about the user friendly aspect. I would still have no idea where you make deductions like morgage payment, work deductions, etc. I dont think I was ever even ask anything about those things.

I have used all the tax software pacs at one time or another and never had any problems.

I have no idea what it's like to have someone do my taxes for me as my Mother worked for HR Block when I was a kid and she expected me to do my own with her help.

When the tax software for the masses came out, I started using that.

I use and suggest using software, but know some would be better off with the piece of mind of a pro tax person.

To each his own.
