I have noticed/wondered about the following for quite some time.

Usually it is a new member. They start a thread asking for a value on either a classic Chevelle they have just purchased or one they are considering purchasing. They obviously know the asking price or the price they just paid for the vehicle but they are asking people to play guessing games about the price of the car.

Is the asking price or what one just paid a big secret? To some I believe it is. To me it seems much easier to just reveal the price and then ask if the price is justified.

This same scenario is often played out to a lesser degree on a car someone wants to sell. Again they play guessing games about the asking price.

To be honest I find these guessing games somewhat annoying. So is this just me? Am I wrong for feeling that way or are others of the same opinion.

Annoys me too. The average person is an indecisive game player.

I threw out a number a while back on a '64 SS and ended up buying the car.
That's how the Seller knew you were serious about the car..... :)

I'm fine with it when established, contributing members ask the question.
I HATE when "members" with less than 10 posts ask that question. They're almost always all Flippers. No thanks.
One exception to my "hate" is when someone has passed away and the current owner who inherited the car is simply looking for guidance.

What bugs me is, I feel like the majority of these people are flippers, coming here under false pretenses. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the first thought that hits my mind every time one of those threads pops up.
I have been burnt at the stake for foolishly suggesting this exact thing.

Well whatever you do don't list the price if you are selling, let them call you and waste everyone's time. 🙄

These type of threads usually coincide with auction season when everyone comes down with BarretteJacksonitis or a case of the Mecums. I don't mind the threads, it brings laughter to what might be a dull and boring day. Kinda like sitting at the boat ramp and watching boat launches while eating a sandwich.

I think some people ask the question about recent purchases and don't mention the purchase price because they feel if people don't know what they paid they won't hold back for fear of hurting their feelings. Many here wouldn't hold back, but some might. I asked that question about my '68 shortly after I bought it, and I didn't mention what I paid for it partly for that reason, and partly because the seller is a member on here and I didn't want to disclose the price out of respect for him if he didn't want it known. Of course, I don't have 10 or fewer posts either...

All valid points. For me , its curiousity. Hey, i teach M&A, Advance Corp Finance aka valuation. So I always like to see a "valuation" process.

Funny thing is, I am eyeing a G8. Young respectful kid, asking 25. Clean car. 70K, no mods. the textbook valuation expert is having a hard time figuring what i really want to pay, and how to make that offer!

The only reason I don’t think most are flippers is most post the cars for more than what they would get valuation here.

Easier to get comps on dealer sites, ebay and BAT on what value would be in todays inflated market
I think that many of the dealers are the ones with unrealistic comparables. If they follow or base the value of their car based on what some dealers list for a comparable car they may find themselves very disappointed if they want to sell.

5 days ago, I sold my 2016 1/2-ton Silverado zL1 crew cab 4x4 with a 5.3 w/8spd automatic, self-leveling, tow package, ball hitch and 5th wheel / gooseneck set ups, along with a bed mounted 38-gal aux tank, lockable metal slide bed cover and a 9lb Pro-charger showing 108,000 miles on the clock, All the Dealer web sites are showing around $32,000 to $38,000 without most of my add On's, I only paid $32,000 +/- a couple of $100, 5 years ago. I sold it for $26,000 and a $1,000 bag of junk silver. Very fair I think, after all, we put over 60,000 of those miles on it, and will need new tires before long. Ran 13,90's / 14.00's.
