It has been 15yrs since Janet and I have gone on a REAL vacation.
We hooked up with a travel agent that we used many yrs ago and have scheduled a 1 week trip to PV. For various reasons and process of elimination, that is the place we decided to go.
QUESTION:
Have any of you guys been, and does anyone have any comments, observations, issues with PV???

Hadn't been to PV (or anywhere else in Mexico) in 40 years, so I'm guessing a lot has changed during that time. I seem to recall my 2 favorite words to the locals being "no dinero".

Been twice but a long time ago. Stay on the resort or, if you go off the resort, book the tour through someone they recommend and you should be fine. PV is no different then most cities in North America, there are areas to avoid. Just be smart.
And bartering in local markets is expected. Never pay the original ask. I usually would start with half and usually meet in the middle somewhere. Enjoy your trip !

Wife and I have been to PV a couple times but not for years. The place was a tourist trap expensive shithole 15 years ago. The place we go to in southern Mexico, which will remain nameless, is great and that is why we have gone there 14 years in a row. Sadly, it is also changing for the worse but still OK. Quant, peaceful, safe, inexpensive places in Mexico are just about gone now.

Went there around 25 years ago, the resort was great, took a dive trip, water was cooold, visited the big Church and the retail market there, got some good deals, Church wasn't special, just nice, visited a better beach area (MHO), about 60 miles south, took the "Local" food and area tour for 3 nights, best part of the trip, well counting the Mescale factory. Heard that cartels have moved into the area in the last 6/7 years, so do your homework. Still got the 4 foot brimmed sombrero comes out to play now and then.

I have friends that live in PV 6 months of the year. They love it and feel perfectly safe, but like anywhere, there are parts of town you avoid. We have been to visit them numerous times and had a ball.
We did an adventure tour that took us across the bay in Zodiacs, then took Mercedes Unimogs a few miles up into the jungle, switched to donkeys for another few miles and then took a series of zip lines back down to the beach for lunch and cervesas. Then a Zodiac back across the bay with a stop to see a school of whales.

I have been to Mexico twice in my life Tajuana in the 60"s and Mazatlan in the 70"s. I would be cautious today.

My wife and I went to Cabo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta back in 1992 on a cruise. We loved all 3 but really liked Cabo. My sister and brother in law have been to Puerto Vallarta many times and love it. We have been going to Cabo 1-2 times per year for 2-3 weeks each time since 2008. We feel very comfortable in Cabo. My sister and brother in law go with us to Cabo and also still go to PV and feel comfortable at both.

I've never been there, (been trying to change my wife's mind about her not wanting to go there) but I've heard other people in the recent past also voice their preference for Cabo just as you have.

Do what you want dude, but there is a whole world out there to see in the little time that we have above ground.
Sure.

Spending time and money in a sh!thole Country just doesn't sound very appealing.

Aw, but historical sites like Tulum can be, "Snorkel through the coral reefs ", swim in a cenote or see the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, abet around Cancun. Been there 4 times over 20 years ago.
We have been to Cancun twice, but it was 15?yrs ago. We climbed the pyramids in Chichen itza and Coba, swam and dived in a cenote, did zip lines, spent time on pristine beaches, parasailing, had diner on a "pirate" ship, drank more than what should be legal. So, all in all, we had a good time there.

My wife absolutely DID NOT WANT to go parasailing, but after I talked her into going, when we got back, she said "Can we go again?" Go figure!

In hi-school and in the Army (early 60s), I did a LOT of swimming and diving.
At one of the cenotes in Cancun, I attempted to do what I was once good at. Not so good now!

Go to Mexico? then get thrown in prison for something. Sounds like fun to me.
