Im looking to buy exhaust manifolds, what date would be numbers matching???

I'm looking at buying exhaust manifolds, what date would still be considered numbers matching?? My build date of my cowl tag reads 01B (01B705)

thanks

Richard

The engine assembly date is the deciding factor IMO. That's what you should use to determine correctly dated ancillary parts. Engine could have been build anywhere from a few days to several weeks before the body date (01B-January 2nd week). For example, if the engine was assembled and date stamped say, December 15 it would have all the correct components already installed so exhaust would have be before the December 15 date.

Look for manifolds that are within a week or two before the engine build date and closely dated for the pair.

If the engine isn't original then 'numbers matching' is kind of a moot point since that's the critical element under the hood.

You didn't mention what year it is. Both 70 and 71 Chevelles built in Arlington have the same type code of Month/Week and 3 numbers following immediately after. Look at http://www.vpcalendar.net/20th_21st.html for the year and see what dates are in the 2nd week.

My original matching 70 L34 block has a J 29 9 date (Oct 29 69) and the exhaust manifolds are K 4 9 and K 5 9, Nov 4/5 69 built. The car is a 11C (3rd week November) Van Nuys built car.

Just curious, did you buy the car new? If not, is it possible the exhaust manifolds are not the originals?

I bought the car from the original owner in 85 and took them off myself. My 290 heads have K 5 9 and J 23 9 dates. My exhaust manifolds and one head were cast after the block was cast and all assembled some time before the 3rd week in November when the car was built (11C). Is this timing uncommon?

Re: Im looking to buy exhaust manifolds, what date would be numbers matching???

Again, it's not so much when the body was built as to when the engine was built that should be of concern for the dates on the exhaust manifolds. The body date only gives a week, a 7-day spead of dates. I've seen engines assemble stamped as much as 3 months prior to installation but a more common time frame is 1-3 weeks.

There's no rule that says the block MUST BE cast first. It's not like you have to cast/machine the block, then cast/grind the crank, then... in any special order. It could very well be there's a stockpile of heads, exhaust, or intake manifolds that predate the block date. Important thing is all engine components from the engine plant would more than likely be dated before the body was built. Engines and transmissions were stacked like cordwood at assembly plants just waiting for someone to order a car build for them.

Dale, the J 29 9 date I mentioned was the block casting date, sorry for the confusion.

Look at the assembly date of the engine. The parts would have to be made before it was assembled.
