I was gonna sell this shortblock cheap but thought i'd ask if i'm making a mistake? It is a 396 2 bolt i took out of a 1970 1/2 RS SS CAMARO.
FACTS are block casting 3969854
date code H2470 PAD TO8O8 But need to sand and dye to be sure on pad #. I do know what I took it out of -a 1970 1/2 camaro RS SS Black ext black int. and i've had this motor 42 years now!
anyways internet shows camaro/chevelle for this casting # so I thought id ask here before i sell too cheap.
Shortblock is machined + in bag, painted, brass freeze plugs, new rods w/Arp bolts,TRW L2242 .60 FORGED pistons ,steel 10 and 20 steel crank in bag from machine shop,ZGS RINGS,Double roller timing chain and more.
What is this worth? No offense but not looking for a whatever you can get for it answer ,looking for proffessional opinion or good offer as this will be a deal on a hard to find item for someone!
PLEASE HELP

By the way i can get the original 1970 heads (parcially closed chamber, oval ports) back even though i sold them but price would be high as I put high dollar manley valves springs, retainers, proffessional porting ect. in them.

Can’t help with the value but if it’s machined and in plastic you need to keep it covered with spray oil or WD40 so it doesn’t start to rust
That is all I got Good Luck with the sale

Thanks almost sold it for a grand this morning but thought i'd holding off and check numbers- Is this shortblock correct for a chevelle or should I post it specifically for a Camaro?
Do the pad #s mean anything? or is there a website to look up the pad #s
THANKS STEVE

It doesn't really matter what it came out of. Not many people looking for 396's these days. The quality of the parts and the quality of the machine work is where the money is. If the engine is in pieces and not assembled then the $1k is about right. How long do you want to hang on to it?

THANKS TEXAS SQUIRREL
The machining is recent and yes high quality, bagged and oiled and all parts are new.
I was gonna put it together for my daughter who just turned 16 and put it in 67 impala painted black as she told me that was her favorite car from the netflix series Supernatural.
Well last night she showed me a honda accord online she wanted. Kids these days huh. She is go,na have to have someone else work on it cause i'm oldschool.
So 396 is for sale and i'm gonna take a big loss!
I will just stick it on ebay or Facebook and dump it if its not special for camaro/ chevelle owners.
I have 8 other BB chevy's in storage ,one is a 69 camaro/ chevelle 2 bolt 396 steel crank factory paint deal guess i'll dump it too for a few hundred.
THX

Well if you can fix a Chevy you have the skills to fix a Honda you just need some guidence as to what is what. They aren't as complex as some people make them out to be. Most of the harder repairs are listed on You tube and the normal stuff like maintenence and disc brakes, suspension repairs are easy to handle yourself. Bleeding the brakes are an easy gravity bleed if you have the patience and the rear drum shoes seem to last forever. Rotors are cheap enough that machining them is a time waster for you. A set of struts are easy enough as they are available for around $60-$80 with the springs already installed and you'll be about 6 bolts R&R away from being done.

At the very least don't let her get ripped off at a fast oil change place or a tire store. Tell her to get an estimate and bring the car home so you can go over what they're trying to sell her.

love it when people say they're not worth anything. buddy had the same attitude when he swapped his 396 out of his car. So I asked what he planned on doing with it. sold it to me for 500 bucks. dropped it in the 66 didn't even change the oil.
Then again I have a 60 over 454 block, 10-10 crank and rods,.new bearings, machine shop said its got minimal taper can't get 100 bucks for it. jim

It really is a shame that the 396/402's get a bad rap.I cut my teeth on one in 73', I get the cost is about the same as a 454 but for a real street cruiser why not? There will be a day when they become "wanted". I think at your price it should get snapped up.

What is the 3 letter code on the front pad where you found the date?

If it doesn't have a 3 letter code stamped on the pad starting with a C, like CJF or CTW it isn't out of a Camaro! I don't know what T0808 is but the block is probably a truck block! Good luck with selling that!
It doesn't matter what the engine was out of. He is selling an 854 block with xyz parts. As far as the T0808, that was the assembly date when the engine was originally built at the Tonawanda Plant.

Yes it has a c something on pad too but if you read what I stated it came out of an original 1970 1/2 camaro and i stated need to sand pad paint ,maybe dye to be accurate i know the (T0 ) ON PAD meant tonawanda 1970 and if it is a truck 396 out of a c10 or c20 those things go for stupid money too! THINK IF YOU HAD ONE OF THOSE TRUCKS AND WANTED THE CORRECT CASTING BLOCK AND DATE CODE YOU CANT JUST MAKE A CALL!

It is nothing special. It is an 854 block and it doesn't matter if it came out of a truck, or a Camaro, or your mom's Impala. T means Tonawanda not TO. The 0808 is the date. C10 or C20 truck engines aren't worth "stupid money". I have sent many of those blocks to scrap because I will never use them. These aren't "Hard to Find" as you put it.
