A friend of mine finally came to the end of building his beautiful 1972 Monte and its been on the road for cruising for only about two weeks.

The water pump shaft sheared just behind the pulley flange and the fan did plenty damage.

Does anybody offer water pumps with a billet shaft?

Seems like a freak occurrence. Maybe the belt was too tight???

I thought that also but it's a serpentine belt system. Freak occurrence.

Is (was) the pump "Off Shore" C-R-A-P?

I could try to make the case for freak accident because over a lot of years I have never seen anything like that. That said most things today are not made like they used to be. Good thing your buddy was not working over a running engine when that shaft decided to "retire".

Cannot say I ever heard of any sort of special material / forged / billet water pump parts. An event like that might make me consider an electric fan with plastic blades. Still not totally fool proof answer but the rotating mass would at least be a lot lighter.

Had that happen once on an old K5 blazer, 454. About 5k rpm with that heavy clutch fan, bam!!
Never used one since. Like lighter fans esp those plastic ones from Summit. Cant break those and move lots of air. Weigh a few oz
