I am considering an alarm system. I normally don't like to let my classics out of my sight, but I think a basic alarm system might be a good idea. After installing a floor shifter recently, I thought it would be a good idea to install a hidden switch in series with the neutral safety switch. At least that way, nobody could start it by hot-wiring it. But an audible alarm may be in the plans. I hate underdash wire arm
I have a switch wired into the starter wire and I firmly plant the emergency brake when I park it and lock it up tight. I also shut the hood and have a megatronix hood lock cable but the car is really never out of my sight. If they slide bed it or tow it the rear tires will make a racket skidding. It’s parked in my garage behind a locked fence protected by # 4 buckshot.

I have a hidden battery kill switch on the outside of my car but honestly, it is not at all easy to start and if anyone were to start it, the engine is WAY louder than any alarm I could buy hahaha. My only fear is a flat bed towtruck, but I don't often leave it anywhere for long enough for that to be a viable option unless they were following me and had some PERFECT timing.

I like this idea. Only I need to repair my E brake pedal ratchet. I think it is missing a small spring(?) that engages the ratchet to hold the pedal down, (another thread coming to a Chevelles.com forum near you).. hard to me to see down there.
I had to look up the Megatronix cable. Looks like a good one.
My home parking is the same as yours, I'll have to check my buckshots numbers . Home theft is my least concerns.
I have some good ideas on deterrents and layers of protection and will be upping my stated value next time the insurance renews, but probably nowhere near the $60k mark until I get some paint that is actually worth washing!

Mine is only at $45,000 right now. Maybe I should up it...
That is exactly what I have mine at. Put it at that value in spring of 2017 right after a mild frame off. At the time Hagerty said that was just about right. But don’t think I could replace it for $45K. Was wondering how much more the payment would be.

Agreed. Prices for these cars and doing paint/bodywork are just plain silly nowadays...

But even that loud of a sound will be easily forgotten as it gets driven away.I'm sure you've heard an exhaust of another car right nearby ? but as it drives away the sound lessens alot.
where as an alarm will be loud in one place and make people nearby take notice.
I remember being at the mall and saw a late model car in the parking lot across the street, get lifted up by a tow truck and pulled way as the alarm blared.(it was the 90's and the only time I ever saw something like that so I never forgot seeing that)
People just looked at it as it got pulled away but at least they watched. The tow truck had its name on the door so I think it was a repossession deal and not a theft.
My point is people glance over at a loud exhaust while they stare at and wonder when a car is on the hook with its alarm sounding loudly.

I saw a post many years ago, by a guy, who used an old cell phone, mounted up under his dash. It’s sole purpose was as a GPS tracker and also to use it as a hands-free listening device, if somebody stole his vehicle he could call it and listen to them, hoping to catch some cross chatter from the thieves. (Disabled speaker) Possibly a tech-smart fellow here can educate us on this, which I believe is a very low cost, owner-managed option?

My biggest worry is a snatch and grab with a tow truck/flatbed too.

** Also, I firmly believe the rate of theft increased at the same rate the practice of ‘chopping a thief’s hand off’ decreased.

I watched a TV show that followed law enforcement team set up a sting operation on car thiefs with a car that they can disable remotely. They bring them in and if there's no prior warrants out for the thiefs they are released with a bench warrant (ticket) and sent on their way.Not even a day in jail and I bet the Judge will be just as lenient with them. They consider car theft and shop-lifting nuisance crimes but to someone who needs their DD car to go to work or to the doctor or for picking up the kids or they spent years rebuilding their classic car its not a nuisance its a life altering moment.Put the scumbags in jail with at least 2 years minimum for a 1st offense.
