My daughter is a senior in HS. Even though we live in PA, she fancies herself a country girl. She rides horses, listens to country music, fishes, and shoots guns. She's a huge horse girl. She rides competitively, is the captain of her riding team, and actually gives lessons to younger riders at her barn. She's also a straight A student. She takes honors classes which are weighed differently and currently she's sitting on a 4.04 GPA. Her desire is to become a veterinarian. Obviously that starts with an undergraduate degree.

She has applied to 6 different schools that have strong programs for Biology or Animal Science which are considered to be good starts towards veterinary school. One of the schools she has applied to is just south of Amarillo Texas and the country/horse girl in her is excited to say the least. We are planning a trip out there in a few weeks to see the school and since my wife and kids have never been to Texas, we thought we'd spend a few extra days in the area to see the sights.

I spent a short amount of time in Texas when I was in the military but I've never been to the Amarillo area. I'm wondering if anyone on this site lives in the area and can suggest some things to see or do.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Big Texan Steakhouse, you to can have a 72 oz steak dinner with all the extras

I've been through a few times on road trips, seamed like a okay place and I think there's a dragstrip there so it can't be bad

Yes they have a Strip. Hopefully it stays open. My little Podunk strip Arroyo Seco Closed last year. They are looking for Promotors if anyone is game.

I live in Lubbock, Amarillo (post-Covid, haven’t been there in a year or so) was a good decent place with a lot of mom-pop stores great variety of non-chain restaurants. People in general are friendly, a lot of small town folk bundle up in there. My sister went to school in Canyon and ended up staying there in Amarillo. Visit the canyon beautiful scenery, horse riding, and easy trails.

The school we are coming out to visit in actually in Canyon TX. We're flying into Amarillo and haven't decided whether to stay there or closer to Canyon.

We did see that there is a large canyon similar to the Grand Canyon that we plan to see. We're going to make a 5 day weekend out of it and we were just hoping to see some decent sights.

I have family out there that we visit every year, probably going to move there in a few. Cadillac ranch is there, Rosa’s Cafe is a Mexican joint that’s really good in Amarillo. I’d definitely stay in Amarillo over Canyon though.

West Texas A&M in Canyon should be a great vet school. Many/most of the vets in Texas are graduates of A&M, mainly at the College Station, Texas campus. As you probably already know, there a many large cattle ranches outside Amarillo and all around the Texas Panhandle. So any "field trips" should be interesting. There are also many wheat farms.

The canyon just east of the city of Canyon is Palo Duro Canyon. Its a state park: Palo Duro Canyon State Park — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. I've hiked and camped there several times. Very unique.

Amarillo is a good place. Route 66 goes through Amarillo. You may want to check out the tourist area on Route 66. Its got a serious small town feel, no metropolitan craziness. There are many great restaurants. I'd recommend Abuelo's for Mexican food. I have a relative that has lived there 40+ years and will never leave. Most of the people are "down to earth" folks. But be ready for FLAT land. We're talkin' cookie-sheet flat. But that just gives it big skies.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks!! That's the school we are going to see. My daughter is pretty excited to see it. She's a die hard country girl at heart and the idea of going to school in Texas pushes all her buttons. My wife and I are excited for her.

We already looked at the website for the Palo Duro canyon and it's definitely on our list of things to see. As a die hard car guy, seeing Route 66 is mandatory! We're going to do a mini vacation around the school visit. We're hoping to spend a few days in the Amarillo area after the school tour just to see something different.

I appreciate all the info!

Glad to help. Have fun!!! Here's the bonus: If you like wine, there are a few wineries south of Canyon, around Lubbock. The McPherson winery is a must. They have been around for years and make great wine.
