I have a few pics of him from the late 80s to early 90s when he used to attend Super Chevy Sunday at Moroso in West Palm. Guy was truly a class act. If you had a car in the show and you were there, you didn't move for a half hour when he talked to you about the car. Those were the days.

I have seen him post on Facebook recently in either a vintage racing or tri-5 group... can't remember which.

Doug and I have been good friends for MANY years. We go WAAAAAAAAAAAAY back to the early Super Chevy days.
He has done some some coverage of my cars in Super Chevy magazine as well as Chevy Rumble when he was the editor.
Several years ago, he spent the weekend at our house while doing some coverage of some local Okla City cars.

Because of Doug, I had the good fortune to become well acauainted with Hayden Proffitt. The significance of that, is because Hayden used to work with Bill Thomas back when Bill was heavily involved with Rochester Fuel Injection units. Bill modified several FI units to improve upper rpm performance (cut them in half, hogged them out and welded them back together). Long story short, I have a Bill Thomas modified unit on the 56 Vette and many years ago at a Super Chevy event in Texas, Hayden inspected my FI unit and confirmed that it was in fact modified by him and Bill Thomas.

Just came over here to make a post and the heading for this thread scared the heck out of me. Glad to see that Doug has not passed - but I do want to say it will be a sad day for many when he does.

When Doug was an editor I worked for him as a freelancer for many years. At the time I was writing for about 18 -20 magazines a month each with editors of different personalities. Far too many where on a power ego trip and where not nice to work for. Doug was at the other end of this spectrum. I can say without doubt that of the hundreds of hours I devoted to Doug and the articles he was after that every minute was top quality time. Doug, if you get to read this then I just want you to know that of the hundreds of editors I have worked for you were simply one of the best - and a gentleman into the bargain. Thanks

Sorry about that, David. That's why I put a smiley face instead of a sad face on the heading of my thread. ;)

Didn't want people to get the wrong idea.

He responded to my email today, btw.

Thanks for the link.

Doug Marion's name has come up on here multiple times over the years. Definitely a legend amongst gearheads! He's at the top of the list of my favorite car magazine editors. The "Econo Performer Monte Carlo" series was extremely informative and I still refer to baseball legend Reggie Jackson's Chevelle 454 build that Doug wrote amongst other articles/series.

Back in the early 80's before the internet and social media I ran Doug down at his home some kind of way. He was living in Texas and we talked on the phone about an hour one night. I asked him his opinion about my 70 LS5 Vert. It was an original number matching two build sheet Astro Blue Blue Interior Black Top and Strip car. My brother and I purchased the car for $1600. We had an offer three years later for $15,000. My question to Doug was could he see the muscle car market go up much more than where it was at that time......His opinion was that it may go up a little more but couldn't see it doing anything crazy. Well if I had held on to it for just a few more years when the Chevelle market exploded in the early 90's.... We sold it for $15K. Chump change in todays standards. I really wish I had that car back.
Well that is my Doug Marion story. He was The Man at Super Chevy during that time for sure.

Doug has always been one of the greatest advocates of the L79 which so many overlooked because it was "just" a small block.
Doug Marion (me) helped a friend race his new '65 L79 Malibu.
He then special-ordered a red '66 L79 (#116376W162834) at Nickey Chevrolet.
Then he helped another friend hop-up his green '67 L79 Malibu.
The L79 Chevy IIs and Chevelles outran everything in their class.
And the ran great for thousands of miles - with no re-tuning or lashing the valve clearancde, etc.
I've probably written 8-10 serious, factual L79 stories from 1980 - 2015.
