I need an underbody solution. I've got the body on a rotisserie, the underside is sandblasted, no primer yet.

The underside needs to be a show quality finish. Lots of choices in products but I need the assistance of experience and I have none at doing this.

Prime before undercoating? Intuition says yes but I think an undercoat might stick better to a sandblasted surface.

Prime and paint before undercoating? Seems like the undercoat would not stick as well. I'm thinking this is probably not the best thing to do.

Paint over the undercoat? Flexible undercoat with paint over the top could crack the paint every time it gets impacted by road debris. Flexitive perhaps?

I found a pretty glossy undercoat but it's not like paint. I saw Boyd's paint over the undercoat on the red 'Junk Yard Dog' 56 chevy. Hmmmmmm???

Perhaps a good painted surface is enough? I plan on driving the car. Rock chips & moisture will hit it sooner than later.

What do you guys do? Anyone have the difinitive solution? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If your looking for show quality, the last thing you want to do in undercoat it. The best thing you can do with freshly blasted medal is etching primer, then top coat it with a satin black enamel, with hardener, and reduced as the paint company recommends. Then sprayed with a gun. Undercoating looks lousy and holds dirt. If your gonna drive the car, it won't hurt to get it wet once in a while if it's painted properly.
The only thing that should be undercoated is the rear wheel wells. Undercouting is great if your trying to "hide" something. Car dealers undercoated b/c these cars were driven daily. If your looking for show quality, paint it....
Look at the 68 body pic in my signiture. It was pained satin black the next day...

I used black rocker guard protector over top of 2-part epoxy primer in the rear fender wells only. Then used 2-part urethane top coat over the rocker guard. The latter is probably not necessary though...Looks great.
