i am buying a 67 malibu 2dr hardtop factory bech seat 4spd 12 bolt posi and a 67 malibu convert factory bench seat 4spd 12 bolt problem is the motors and trans are missing out of both and front end sheet metal are gone.i have known for a long time and the rears were not added to them.i was wondering if there are little things to look for in case they were L-79's? thanks

The 12-bolt rears are a step in the right direction. The L79 came standard with a 12-bolt. The Chevrolet Power Teams chart only shows 10-bolt rear ends for the 283 and 327/275hp L30. Could either of these been ordered with a 12-bolt? I suppose but it would have had to have been a special order.

Sadly the engines and trans are gone on both cars so it's really a non-issue now. :(

One way to distinguish a L79 car without the engine would be to look at the transmission configuration. Generally, the only smallblock engine to use a Muncie 4spd would be the L79; other smallblocks would use a Saginaw 4-spd. A Muncie installation is different from a Saginaw installation. Look for location of the speedometer cable and where it enters the body. The Muncie cable enters the body in the passenger side toeboard (one inch hole) and two clips welded to the underside of the floor. Of course, the L79 could also have had a floor mounted 3-spd which would have the same speedo cable installation as a Saginaw 4-spd on the drivers side. This is not a sure way to tell, but it would be a good indication.

Most L30 327 Chevelles in '67 used a 10-bolt rear, but only if it was a factory 4-speed the rear was upgraded to a 12-bolt (also true in '68).

What was suggested about the speedo cable is good. Only the L-79 version of the 327 used a Muncie for '67.

A h.d. 3-speed was the only 3-speed for the L-79 but was also offered at extra cost over the 3-speed Saginaw with column shift on the L30.
