During a Saturday morning shop clean up spree, I thought I would try my 6' tall Craftsman rolling toolbox in a side room, freeing up more work space in the garage bay. Once it was moved, I realized the floor was un-even and scrapped the idea. While moving the toolbox back into its original spot, I wasn't paying attention and during the transition from the side room to the garage bay, all the drawers flew open at once.

Ever see thousands of dollars of tools implode on themselves? It wasn't a pretty site, trust me! I was lucky I wasn't in the path of the toolbox because there was no stopping it. After picking tools out of all the nooks & crannies for half an hour, I tried lifting it back up only to hear a "pop" in my lower back. I dropped it back to the floor with another sickening "thud" and that was it for me on Saturday!

It wasn't untill mid-day on Sunday that I was able to get my brother to help me lift it back on its wheels. Fortunately, the only carnage was a bent track on the lower drawer. My back will heal.

What a dumb ass!

Yeah Gregg, I've seen that happen a couple times here in the shop...not a pretty site. :(
Worse yet when the toolbox is full of mics and indicators. I try to get the guys to lock the box before moving.

Greg-tool boxes can be replaced-take care of the back! Who will take all our CB pictures if something happened to you. :beers: How's the 71 coming along-haven't seen an update for awhile?

Too bad you didn't have a camera handy. You could post it as a garage sale from 'Tim the Toolman.' :D

Seriously, back problems are nothing to sneeze at. Take care of it.

By the way, I'd like to thank you again for going out of your way to come back to the hotel from the show grounds and give me a lift to the Nashville Speedway at CB last year.

Don't feel bad, the same thing happens at diamond-selling conventions in Antwerp. They're always knocking over jewel-chests full of diamonds, and they get scattered all over the floor. Then somebody has to pick them up by hand..very time consuming. That's why diamonds cost so much.

Well, this clean-up project is related to the '71. I've decided to move the project from my business up to my parent's garage (less than one mile away) which will be a more "nights & weekends friendly" work environment, plus there is better light and rockin' tunes. I hope to turn the wick up on the resto very soon. Thanks for asking...my very best to you and Cathy!

It was my pleasure Dale...I still recall that trip to N.S.S. like it was yesterday. The best was seeing the grin on Clint's face as we had to do the quick turn-around after missing the 1st entrance to the speedway with all those other cars. Nothin' like a 502 BBC and a 4-speed, right Clint!!!!! :)

I've got an old Blue Streak ignition cabinet, the kind with all the compartments on the doors. On one door I keep spools of wire, all colors and sizes. The other door has those little boxes that the hardware stores use for specialty hardware (in the pull-out trays). Those boxes are full of bulbs, switches, fuses, battery terminals, hose clamps, etc. The cabinet shelves are full of spark plugs, gaskets and seals, and little plastic boxes. The plastic boxes hold my small hardware (little screws), pop rivets, specialty hardware (e.g. rear end hardware). I have one whole shelf of my 3M respirator cartridges. You get the picture, full, heavy and lots of little parts.

One day, I was in the garage doing nothing at all with this cabinet. I had just backed out my wife's Mustang GT convertible, so new it had less than 100 miles. All of a sudden, this cabinet tears itself off the wall, hits the work bench below it and does a 360* flip as it rolls off the bench and onto the floor right where the front of the car had been. Parts are all the way to the driveway.

I let loose a sting of four letter words. The cable guy happens to be there, hears the cabinet crash and sticks his head into the garage, says the same thing I did. Wife comes out, says nothing and starts picking up parts 'cause she knows how frustrated I am. The cabinet was more or less fine, except one of the door hinges separated itself from the door. It was riveted on so as I picked up loose pop rivets off the floor I riveted it back on.

I can't imagine dumping a tool box, I feel for ya. BTW, that cabinet is sitting on two large angle iron shelf brackets today.

most file cabinets are made so that when one drawer is open the others are locked preventing them from opening and over balancing the cabinet resulting in just such an accident as you described. maybe the tool box people could learn something from the file cabinet folks. BTW i agree with others regarding the back, be careful there. it aint worth a serious injury, however, we all tend to do the same thing in that situation.

Sorry to hear that, glad it was not a serious injury (hopefully)....

Bill h makes a good point... they could at least have some mechanism to lock the drawers for 'transport mode only'... I wouldn't trust the locks on some boxes if there was a lot of weight in the drawers....

good luck on the project

Greg, I feel your pain.
Many years ago it was my first day on the job at a dealership and I was rolling my Craftsman top and bottom across the uneven floor and the same exact thing happened. CRASH. Both the top and bottom were smashed up, and they were only a couple years old.
Amazingly enough, the particular Craftsman boxes I've got have an unlimited lifetime warranty, so that night I took them back to Sears and they exchanged them, no questions asked. I couldn't believe it.
I learned my lesson to lock them everytime I move them.
Mike

Gregg,
I am sorry to hear of all the trouble you went thru but atleast it sounds as though you will be fine and not much damage was caused by the falling tool box.

Andy
