I got things running again but still seem to have problems hitting 2nd gear when driving. I'll try to explain this without a picture. On the transmission side plate/ gears itself : Between 3rd and 4th gear it more than obviously hits Nuetral, its like 3 clicks when doing it manually under the car... 3, N, 4... as for 1-2 gear is there a center point or N? Or does it just throw back and fourth from 1-2? Because I dont seem to have a 2nd gear here, when I think its in 2nd it acts like Nuetral, this isnt a linkage issue either Ive done it manually and played with it, so either I dont have 2nd in this trans, or something is hooked up wrong...

Hey Bill -
Hmm, I dont think it has a stop bolt. But I unhooked the linkage for 1-2 and tried clicking it into 2nd manually and it wouldnt go. It just goes 1-N-STOP. It feels like the problem is the side plate or the gears, worst case senerio... which wouldnt be fun.

Not one! But it may be heading that direction :( Unless I put the side plate on wrong...

Bill!
Im not sure what it was but I gave it some force, and I cant be positive but the little ears that hook up to the linkage, 1-2 maaaay have been flipped upsidown so it curved outward instead of in... if that makes any sence... its official, I now have all my gears.

Anything special to do when breaking in a clutch? It sure hits nice now! Well tomorrow is due day, taking it to work! This may sound rediculous but my e-brake was a little bit ... in the need of work, since I got the car... it worked but pretty poorly and its on my list. With a sadly working e-brake when parked should I leave it in Nuetral or in gear? Ive heard mixed things about the car "resting" while in gear...

Phil,

Yes, the linkage description does make sense. I'm glad you're getting the bugs worked out. I would park the car and put it in reverse, most factory cars w/locking steering wheels you had to have the car in reverse to get the key out. Get the E-brake fixed as soon as you have time, you will need it. I like to put the car in reverse even with the e-brake on.

I see you found the problem. I was going to say that if the side cover is not installed while the trans is in 2nd gear then you would get a bind because the C shift fork arm is not sitting in the 1-2 gear slider groove. The 2 shift forks are in the side cover. (see far right brass syncro and to the right of that is the syncro slider for 1-2 gears. The slider has a groove where the shift fork rides.) Same thing goes on the far left side which is 3-4 gears.

And yes I see why you were binding. You can see that if the part is mounted backwards then the shift will bind.
