Nope, maybe a home brewed car.
The one elusive Z16 convertible built has never been seen or heard from.

I don't agree with that statement. The lone convertible wasn't mass produced but one did come off the assembly line.

This illusive Z16 convertible has been kicked around since the Civil War days.
I am 110% convinced that if it DID exist, it would be fully documented, recorded in the national archives and EVERYONE would know where it is stored.
Does it really exist? Does the Holy Grail exist? Maybe.

Was a REAL Z16 conv REALLY built at a GM assembly plant? Maybe.

It was a "special" corporate car that ended up like all other special corporate cars...CRUSHED.

Not necessarily a lot of the stuff that was to be scraped never made it.
I have seen owned many one off prototype parts and alot of the special corporate cars were given or sold to friends and family. And then there is Warhoops where dozens of protos have been saved from the crusher.

That's not true either. I know the man that bought that car from GM and took delivery at Ed Rinke Chevrolet in Centerline, MI right down the street from the GM Tech Center in Warren, MI. He sold it a year later and no one has seen it since. It was probably beat to death or wrecked and made into beer cans 30 years ago. :D

Most of us "Old Hands" know of the stories of this car, and are convinced it did exist. I know of one guy who has personally been following leads on it for about 25 years. All have come up with no gold at the end of the rainbow. If it is out there, it is buried pretty deep. Heres hoping somebody unearths it someday. It is a piece of history.

It's interesting to ponder if GM intended to build one (or more) for 'sale'. 1965 production totals shows RPO Z16 listed at 201 units and the description as "Special Sport Coupe & Convertible Equipment". Hmmm...

If the convertible was built at GM in Michigan and sold through a dealership, would it have been included in the 201 reported? Obviously it wouldn't be a special built car for Bunkie Knudsen (as often thought) if later sold as new, would it? Would the prototypes (I understand there were 2) built at Baltimore be considered in the 201 and reported as Regular Production?

is there ACTUALLY proof that the convert was made? or is all just stories of said car being produced? i'm sure there's plenty of people going around saying, 'yeah, i saw it at my local chevy dealer', or 'i remember seeing it at a car show' type stuff, but is there anything in the official GM production #'s that say it was built??? i'm guessing probably not since it wasn't a distinct model, no unique VIN and such, just lumped in with other "SS" cars for production purposes. or am i wrong?
