My machine shop told me not to run more than 38 degrees (total) timing. Car makes most Power at 40. I run 110 leaded iron block iron headed 496.....race only. Car sees 6500-6700 rpm.....is there a bad to adding the timing?....as long as the fuel is good? It will be on the dyno friday with its "new" motor....I plannned on bumping it up to 40, checking the A/F and running it...... I have had some catrostrophic failures in the last few years and am trying to be "careful"....you rthoughts on 40 (total)...

TIA

Detonation is the killer, my 10:1 454 on race gas mix liked 40*. I should have just run straight pump gas and kept the timing down. May have made more power. It also depends on your compression ratio.

13.1 to 1........I like to run it rich (a lot of heat here). I'm just looking for a few real world guys to say ..hell ya I run mine at 40+.........

I have run it at 40......
I had a crank break.... AFter 2 years
and a camshaft break into 3 pieces.... after 50 passes
I do not think the timing had anything to do with this, but?????? IDK
Plugs do not have any small metalic piece indicating detonation

You could get 100 people telling you they can run at 40 ,but your engine may or may not work there.
Even 2 identically built engines could have a different timing need.
Would be nice if we could say ,yeah run it at 40 and you'll have no issues ,but you know that's not really possible.
