I have to admit a serious error here by my Dad.

My dad purchase a 67 chevelle from a man n 2008. We got a bill of sale with a vin and etc. Dad did not look at it very close. We started the restortation and now is ready for insurance and a tag. During the restoration, Dad took the bill of sale down to the courthouse and got a title for it. However, the title has the incorrect VIN number that was on the bill of sale. We live in Florida and just noticed this over the last hour as Dad was filling out insurance papers

Anybody got advice?

How far off is the VIN?
A couple digits? or completely wrong VIN that is way off?
If it's just a couple digits, that's an easy one to resolve.
Completely wrong VIN for a different car, that's going to be a tough one.

Its a completely wrong VIN number.

The bill of sale was for 135 6 cylinder tudor car ....and the VIN number on the car is for a 136 v8 coupe.

I still have not registered my car which I bought almost a year ago. I was going to register it at one point and before I was going to go to the DMV I decided to check the Vin# on the title with the Vin on the car they didn't match. Called the dealer I bought it from that was out of state. They had made an error on the bill of sale and when they made up the title they had used that number also. When they realized where the mistake was they issued me a new title. I had the car insured from day one and had to let them know too so they could correct the Vin# also. I don't remember what it was exactly with mine but it was either missing one number or one number was wrong.

You insured the car when you bought it without a tag?

Yes, I planned on registering it when I got it but things came up. I wanted it insured in case something happened to it in the garage and got an agreeded value of $35,000 on it.

The best advise I can give you is to try and find the seller and see if he made a mistake that can be rectified easily. The NEXT bit of advise I can offer is to GET A TITLE IN YOUR NAME AND ESTABLISH OWNERSHIP BEFORE SPENDING ANY MONEY ON THE CAR....:beers:.

In GA, the vehicle has to be insured and that info entered into the state's system BEFORE a tag and title can be issued by DMV.
That is the same for Florida.

I don't know how the Florida DMV operates but I had a smiliar issue in NY where the VIN on the title of a car I purchased was one digit off. I took a photo of the VIN plate and also made a pencil tracing of it and took it down to the DMV with my paperwork and they corrected it for me on the spot. Other states might require a visual inspection.

 Other than the mentioned idea of contacting the seller to see what's going on, YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG PEOPLE what to do. You should ask your Department of Motor Vehicles what else (other than contacting the seller) you can do. Imagine going to the DMV and telling them some guy from a website told you <fill in the blank>. If they don't laugh at you, they'll be pissed at you.

1. Don't sink any more money into it until this is resolved.
2. Contact the seller: Get a "revised" Bill of Sale.
3. If you can't do #2, then have your local cops run the VIN to see if it's stolen.
4. Contact the DMV and ask for advise.

What Bruce said...

Also, be prepared for additional surprises/disappointments/shocks.

1. Stolen car?
2. "salvage title" car?
3. Other, probably bad.

Sorry for your trouble.

Ok. Thanks. I think we will be getting it straighten out. He talked to the seller and he said he could and would straighten it out for Dad. He had a couple of project 67's laying around and got it mixed up when writing the numbers down.
