Hey, I just got a new starter for my 1970 chevelle but there is only two terminals for the new starter and I have three wires to hook up. There is a big red wire, a green wire, and a blue wire. and i have points ignition. Any help would be great thanks.

Does this help? http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref4.html

I believe on a 70 originally there was a yellow wire from the "R"terminal to the coil's + terminal and a purple 10 ga. from the neutral safety switch to the "S" terminal .

If the colors have been changed or are too faded, you can use a test light to sort them.
"R" terminal wire will be hot (back fed from coil if still being used) with key "on" and "S" terminal wire will be hot when key is in "start" position.

you only need the "R" terminal to have a wire connected to it IF you still have the original points type distributor.

Simply put, you have the wrong solenoid. You can't run stock points ignition engine with a two post solenoid. (Well you can, but it requires extra work--installing a diode)--just easier to get the proper 3 post solenoid.

would it be possible to use the starter if i were to switch to electronic ignition?
Well, it's up to you. It will require work on your part no matter what you do.

You can

A) Get a starter/solenoid that has the original set-up that has an "R" terminal for the points distributor bypass wire like factory.

B) Keep your new starter and use a diode; http://www.americanautowire.com/PDFLink/92965418 500529 IN.pdf

C) Upgrade to electronic ignition like HEI, but then you will have to provide a new power wire to your distributor as HEI and others need a full 12 volts, and you can't use the factory resistance wire that feeds the coil in the original set-up.

If you just purchased your starter and you specified it for a 70, they sold you the wrong starter! Take it back and get the correct one with the 3 terminals, and that will be the easiest and probably cost effective thing you can do.
