Helping a friend replace his stock gauges in his console - it's a 68 Camaro.

In any case we are using the wiring from the original gauge and an Auto Meter 2 1/16 Voltmeter gauge.

The back of the Auto Meter gauge has a provision for a ground and a a 12v connection either to the ignition switch or other 12v source. The factory wiring had two 12v leads one on each side, a black one and a black with a white line and the gauge was grounded through the mounting plate.

My question is - do I hook both, the black and the black with the white line to the 12v terminal on the Auto Meter gauge or just one. If just one which one will I use.

I tried both and it seems to work ok but just want to be sure.

Thks

Rich

The original was an amp meter. One of the black wires goes to the terminal by the battery and the other goes to the horn relay. If you are changing to a voltmeter use the one that goes to the horn relay.

Wouldn't hooking up a voltmeter to the horn relay terminals cause the meter to be on all the time? With an ammeter it didn't matter if it was there, but the voltmeter is different. Also, causes a slight drain on the battery when the car is off. If it was my car I'd hook it up to the IGN terminal on the fuse block. Just my opinion.

Absoulutely. The quick first answer is rarely the best one. Wasn't thinking straight. Just hook it to the ignition terminal on the fuse box.
