Guys could you help me get this wired up? I have a 67 with a big block 454, I think I have a Externally regulated alt. And what wires go to the starter?

Here are the wires comeing from the horn relay and the voltage reg? Should I have run the 3 wires, red, blue and white up front by the radiator, they go to the Alt?

We be appreciated thanks:thumbsup:

Going to work on it this morning, I searched alot of threads last night, maybe I can piece all this together. Try a wire here a wire there, hopefully I don't burn something up :(.

The Green wire on the Hei, in the above pic, do I need to run it through the firewall and hook it to the fuse box?

Does the Red go to the post label bat on the Alt?
Does the Blue and White go to the pronges on the Alt, and does it matter which is which?

That is an INTERNALLY regulated alternator. The HEI only need a 12V switched power source.
The starter has a large post for the positive cable from the battery and a smaller post for a purple wire which runs from the neutral safety switch.

As suggested...get a NEW front light and engine harness...either from AAW or M&H. Then it just a simple matter of plug 'n play...factory color coded.
You can even order the harnesses with the needed HEI and internal alternator hookups built into the harness.
That splice and guessing game is simply crazy. Chances are you'll burn it all up and then be buying the harnesses anyhow. ;)

If memory serves me correct, the blue wire all the way to the right is where you want to hook the power from your HEI. The wire from the firewall to the coil is a resistance wire. You need to scrape all of the wire protecting goo away from the firewall plug and take the connector out with a pin. You can buy new connectors online that are the same as GM used. Put a new connector on the HEI wire, intergarte it into the loom and plug it in. If you are not concerned with a clean look you can run the HEI wire through the firewall and attach it to the fuse block as well.
For the alternator, I switched to an IR unit and ditched the voltage regulator and associated wiring. Much easier to deal with in the long run.
A wiring diagram will give you all of the correct colors. You should get one of those.
The large wire from the plug should be the purple NSS.

Here is my underhood wiring diagram for a 1965 Chevelle with HEI & alternator (SI) with an internal regulator. I don't know the differences between 65 & 67 but have a look. The starter hook up should also work for you.......If any value, just print it for reference.

Edit: I'm not sure of the diagrams accuracy so use it at your own risk!

You can use a little lacquer thinner on a rag to wipe off wires to see their color.

As suggested above, you really should buy new harnesses instead of patching up 45 year old spaghetti.

For under $250 you can get brand new engine and forward lighting harnesses. ;)

should this diagram work, it looks simple enough?

I untaped all this, the wire comeing from the junction block, a wire from the horn relay and a wire from the voltage reg are all tied in together, then I guess went on to the alt. A second wire connected to the horn relay in the same place as the other goes into the plug into the firewall. Is this workable?

I would Love to get a new harness, but I have to make do with what I have:)
I know the feeling - I need a dash harness, and $400+ ain't easy to come by these days. :)

Yes, that will work...is your alternator a higher current version than the factory version?
