Wiper motor started smoking!

This is a good one. I replaced my wiper motor which has never worked since i got the car. I had tried jumping the terminals to see if the old motor was any good, but i never got it to work. So I bought a new motor, removed the washer pump from the old motor and bolted the thing back in. Fast forward to today when i hooked up my battery for the first time, the wiper motor made a little whir or click and started smoking! Well naturally i pulled the wires off and re-checked that i had them hooked up right per the diagram from this site. I disconnected the wiper arm thinking it may be binding or something but no deal, it just starts smoking again. I think I may have toasted it. What could cause this?? could i have put the washer pump on wrong?? THanks

ensure that anyone that may have owned the car before you didnt just switch the wires around by popping out the female spade and flipping them around in the plastic recepticles. when using the wiring diagram look at the colors in correspondence with the connectors. thats what happened when I purchased mine the moron I bought it from had every wire changed around. second: the motors instructions state they will smoke a little before normal operation, you just dont want to have a three alarm fire. third, without the proper ground strap the motor definitely will not work; this was the last problem I had to solve on mine after clearing up the wiring issues. My experience with these motors has been they smoke like a bitch without a ground, so make sure the circuit is complete at the wiper switch. On 69's (dont know if its the same on 70's the ground is a metal strap in the back of the dash and shares ground with the headlight switch and then connects to the instrument cluster (where it completes the electric circuit.)
