I have adjusted the windows in my 70 coupe per the Fisher manual. They dont mention how to adjust the two bumpers at the top inside of the window. They are covered with some kind of black fuzzy carpet. If I adjust them to the inside of the car they only touch the glass when its all the way down. If I adjust them toward the window they make an awful sound when the window goes up or down. I wonder if they are even needed? I am concerned because I'm going to have the windows tinted and I'm sure these bumpers will damage the tint in short order!

Those bumpers are used to push the glass against the window felts (they seal out water and keep the window from rattling) that are mounted on the outer door channel. So to answer your question, they are necessary. Felt kits include new pieces for those adjustment brackets. Yours may be worn out, thus causing the noise.
