Since I've put in the new HR cam, I have a tick... The tick itself isn't wierd, it's a valve train tick, one single tick only, not more then one. I've adjusted the valves hot and running 3 times, they are perfect.

I'm up to my ears in headers leaks, too, but this one tick has gotta be valvetrain, it's just too metalic and hard to be anything else.

Here's where it gets wierd...

It only happens cold, the first 2 or 3 minutes that the engine has been running.

Sometimes it will just STOP. Instantly gone without a trace. I could be cruising down my street, 2500 rpm in second, and it will just STOP.
It doesn't always stay stopped though.
It will come and go, for 2 or 3 minutes, then it goes away and doesn't come back.
Warm restarts are always quiet.

What do you guys think?
At $65 a pair, I'd hate to think one of my Lunati/Morel lifters is lame.

My new lunati/ morel hydraulic roller lifters tick when cold, too.. only until it warms up to 160 degrees+, then gone. I am going to try giving a little more preload. How much lifter preload are you using?.. 1/4 turn? 1/2 turn? 3/4 turn? .. when you adjusted the valves.

I heard others say the same about the morel lifters being noisy when cold.

EFI...Sure its not an injector? sometimes those things can be a little noisy and mimic a similar sound.
Cams with fast ramps can make a little valvetrain noise, period, almost impossible to get rid of. heck, you should hear the stock valvetrain in my 5.3 LSx. Sounds like the lifters are outsid the motor lol

I started out at 1/4 turn preload when I initially adjusted them on the stand, Verified that hot and running the first tie, then went to 1/2 turn, then 3/4 turn this last time.

At a quarter turn, the entire valvetrain was a little noisy all the time.
At 3/4 all is silent, except for this one very loud ticking, only when it's cold.

I'll take a listen to the injectors too.

Yeah.. I am at a 1/4 turn and ticking when cold.. recommended preload for the Morels works out to just a hair over a half turn, which I am about to do. If you are at 3/4 turn, then it seems it is not the adjustment.

exhaust leaks are really misleading, though.

Well, maybe my 3/4 wasn't quite 3/4?

I ran the drivers side cold running, this time I put a hollow steel jack handle on the poly lock and my ear on the other end. Most were clacking a bit. I loosened em up, found zero lash and then tightened em till the clack in the pipe was gone, took around half a turn.

I got lazy on the pass side, engine was pretty warm be then, and "MY LOUD TICK" wasn't heard at all today anyway. I'm not sure I like the pair on #2 at all... Just didn't seem to be behaving right.

Tomorrow I'll run the pass side right, from stone dead cold, and we'll see.

Took her for a pretty long cruise, sounds real good, running great.

For a 7/16 x 20 thread rocker stud, I calculated the following preload settings;
1 turn = 0.050"
3/4 turn = 0.038"
1/2 turn = 0.025"
1/4 turn = 0.013"

Therefore 3/4 turn would give the .03-.04" pre-load suggested by Chris Straub with 7/16 X 20 studs.

here is a quote on that thread

I bought my Morels from Mike also and also used Chris' help. I installed them with a new Voodoo HR and Brodix RRs. I lashed them a half turn and they were noisy. Upon closer investigation by Mike and Chris, I learned the following: Lash grows by about .005 - .006 on my aluminum heads; my combo needs a minimum of .030 on HP applications, .040 - .060 on street and marine applications. One turn with 7/16-20 studs = .050. Soooo, I went with one full turn and lash should be about .045 when hot. Engine is quiet and runs very well with one full turn. Haven't tried running past 6000 rpm yet. If I was using this setup for just drags, I would use 3/4 turn to get about .0325.

Jim,

I have the same cam as you (except in the BBC version) and its a ticky cam. I had GM lifters and changed them out to Cranes - still have noise. It comes and goes. I just gave up and just deal with it.

It is a little suspect that on one or a set is making the noise. Try a full turn for testing purposes.

So yesterday I did the drivers side to a "real" 1/2 turn. This morning did the same to the pass side. A short drive seems to show that the "loud one" is gone, tho they are still a lil ticky when cold.

Thanks for all the help, it's good not to be alone in this. Whatever cold noise is left, it's normal.

Just for the record, I just readjusted the preload on my Morel hydraulic roller lifters, from 1/4 turn to 3/4 turn, and the noise I had until the engine warmed up is now gone. Morels certainly do like more preload than the Comp roller lifters I had.

Thanks again to Mike Lewis for sending me these lifters.
