I am looking to get a lighter starter. The car is a street/strip car and I am looking to reduce weight & have a starter that will last the many starts at the track. My starter solenoid is shot I believe. Anyway just looking for advice on a good light & smaller starter for the chevelle.

if you have a big flywheel, get one for a 92 Astro van with AWD.
if you have a small flywheel, get one for a 94 Caprice.
make sure you also get the right bolts for the starter you get, and a slightly bigger terminal to hook the starter wire up, since the newer solenoid uses a slightly bigger metric stud.

You can also use gm#12361146. It has a dual bolt pattern for 12 and 14" flywheels, solenoid can also be rotated (multiple bolt pattern) for better exhaust clearance. It's a hi-torque mini starter. Weighs 10.5lbs. uUSes 3.75:1 gear reduaction.

I have one, works very well. Should be priced somewhere around $150-175.

how do you guys know this stuff?
Is the 92 astro starter a big block 168 tooth compatable one.
Is it smaller than a old school gm unit for a big block. or just better due to the needle bearings?
