I need to replace my stock starter on my '70-350 SB; I see that there are 2 improved (mini/hi-torque, lower amp draw) versions currently being used: The 'NipponDenso' style and the 'Hitachi' style.
If I'm right, my understanding is that they both have about the same specs, but they have different solenoid to starter motor assembly styles.
Is there an advantage of one over the other?
Also has anyone used the Sumitt # SUM-G1660?

Thanks again.

OK...I didn't know there was so much retrofitting differences; I hate having to add shims and gsakets where you shouldn't otherwise need to.

Now, how do I tell if I have a 153 v. 168 tooth FW.?

...and...
this brings up 2 more Q's:

Are the mini's as affected by header heat? (so should they also wear a heat shroud?)

Is the quick-disconnect wire harness that Summit sells worth the cost and extra install time ? ($30)

Thanks for the info.

1. 168 tooth is 14" diameter

2. Any starter/solenoid can be affected if it gets hot enough

3. Heat shield blankets can be bought for $20, cheap insurance!
