I just had a my TH400 rebuilt, and I need a new speedo gear. What info is needed to determine which gear ( how many teeth ) that I would need.

This is what I can tell you:

Th400
3.73 gears
15" wheels, looking at running either a 28 or 29" tall tire.

If this is enough info, how do you determine which speedo gear to use?

If you have an 8 tooth drive gear, a 21 tooth driven gear will be about 2% fast.
You will show about 72 at 70 MPH.
If you have a 7 tooth drive gear, a 19 tooth driven gear will be about 1% slow.
You will show about 69 at 70 MPH

Is there a way to check the drive gear to verify?

My driven gear is a yellow one, which is 41 teeth, which I believe to be incorrect. My housing is numbered in the 30's ( I'll have to check what range ) and a prior owner has " made " this driven gear fit.

Verle, I've gotta ask where your finding 7 & 8 tooth drive gears for a TH400.
All I find are 15 thru 21 tooth for the TH400.
The 7 & 8 are showing for the THM350C/Muncie 4 Speed.

Dan ,what I find is the 41 tooth using the 1362293 sleeve(housing)
Here's what I've found:
For the 28" tire you need the 16 (orange)/43 (purple)gear combo
For the 29" tire you need the 17 (red)/44(dk grey)gear combo

P/N 8623311 =16 /Orange
P/N 1362196 =43 /Purple -uses same 1362293 sleeve
P/N 8629548 =17 /Red
P/N 9780470 =44 /Dk Gray -uses same 1362293 sleeve
