Unilite, Pertronix or Crane conversion. I like the Unilite.
I have a unlite from a chevy small block is that the same for big block, did try it once could not get the motor(454) to fire as soon as i put the points dist back in fired right off and that was with a brand new photo eye, cap and rotor. Was wondering about these hei dist i often see on different sites, also a friend told me to stay away from Pertronix brand, any thoughts. thanks Harley

You can't go wrong with a GM type HEI dist. A lot of guys I know use different types of set-ups and conversion kits for their old points dist. and almost all of them had some type of problem. The guy I bought my Chevelle from had used Mallory then changed to MSD, after problems with both he went to a GM dist. and it served him and ME very well.

chinese made junk ! don't go there.
Go unilight or even a twin point set up if you want a stock appearance, but GM HEIs are great, you'll have no issues.

You can pick up a GM style dist from Jegs or Summit, just make sure it's USA made. Or, check the classifieds in this site or submit a Want Ad, I got one for my Stroker that way (original GM)----I replaced the cap & rotor and it's been working great.

hei's were a bit malighned (and dismissed) when first introduced, now, theres a bunch of companies tweaking, rebuilding and selling them and singing their praises. msd also makes a small cap hei and, there are even hei's converted for ford performance (an oxymoron?) engines....i'd go to a junkyard, there are tons of them every where (just make sure you get one with a vacuum canister) and check the shaft and drive gear for excessive movement and slop. hook up your dis. power wire (minus resistor wire) and you're good to go...you can always upgrade coils, modules, cannisters, etc.etc. later on.....good luck
