Hi all. I have done a lot of research trying to find out exactly what 396 I have. The ONLY numbers I can get off this engine are 3969854 and the build date of A 8 70. Guy I got it from says it was out of a 70 Chevelle. I know it could probably be 1 of 3 different HP ratings. I have checked every spot where a stamp or raised letters should be but they look like they were never stamped or cleaned off. The only other thing I come up with is that the 3 holes above the oil filter are all threaded and the middle one had a plug in it that I took out. I read that if this is 1/2 in threads then it might be the 375hp. What is the most accurate way to measure the threads ?

Thanks

Chris, look in front of the right cyl head, right a bove the water pump, there should be a pad that has a 3 digit letter, this should tell you if it hasnt been decked or restamped

Good block for sure, worth bug bucks with a-70 bld date for chevelle resto's/#'s matching guy's if it's a CTX (man trans) or CTW(auto trans) L34 396(really a 402)/350hp 2 bolt main block as can be found on pad on front/pass side of block.

It could also be an LS3 400(402) block with 330hp which is not worth as much if its coded as such on fron t motor pad. But if the #'s are decked off the block and only the 854 casting # is all you have to go by then who knows.

Not likely an L78 or L89(al heads) 375hp block but could be,depends on code on front pad.

Either way you have a good find there for sure.

I will look this weekend. Also I guess I need to drop the pan to see how many bolt main I have. What would I look for in there ? Lastly I just bought a sender unit that was for a 396 325/350 engine. If this is a 375 engine can I still use this fuel sending unit without much issue ?

Thanks
