I just got back from a major car show (between 1000 and 1200 cars) and there was not a single 64 or 65 Chevelle/Malibu entered. What gives?

Many (if not most) were used & abused on roundy-round tracks
until they were simply not easily available any more. The 64 & 65
were dominantly popular amongst the circle track world for decades.
Many more were simply seen as devalued "used-up" old cars before
the resto or collector market was born, and (ho-hum) went to the recyclers.

The early Chevelles were comparatively seen as modern equivalents
of the the tri-five 55-56-57s, and raced & wrecked with equal fervor,
both on and off the track.

The 64 & 65 Chevelles also do not "fit" neatly into the view of those
who tend to believe the muscle-car era began with "big" motors.

If you want to see a bunch of 64-66 Chevelles get tore up watch The Last American Hero. This is a movie about Jr Johnson. The racing action shot on local tracks is nothing but cut up and tore up Chevelles. It's sad. Most were two door hardtops!

Frank,
My first 65 Malibu SS, after I sold it, went straight to a Race Shop. It was strip out, made into a race car in a month, drove at the local short track, wrecked afer three races, distroyed by the fire that followed, driver seriously injured with 3rd degree burns. I would have to say the 64 and 65's were used up on short tracks, a lot of them. Some of us are lucky to have the survivors.

I happen to agree with this theory. Many musclecar nuts restored cars with "a big block" leaving the 64/65 (except the Z-16) in the backround. Many were junked and crushed (I'm even guilty of that). Because of that there are fewer 64/65s on the road making them sought after. Then again, it's just my opinion.

I showed my car 2 weeks ago at a show in Little York, N.Y. There was about 600 cars there. I saw including mine 4 65 Chevelles. At the shows numbers of people have sought advise on the 65s they are currently restoring. In the near future I will be seeing a few more 65s. The real hoot about this show was during the awards when they called my name and handed me the trophy for "Best G.M." I was blown away.:hurray:

Scott, we miss each other again, I was at the Jordan Fall Festival, about 500 cars and there was only a couple of 64 and 65 velles in attendance. I have to agree the 64 and 5 velles are not as common as the GTO. At the Little York show about 5 years ago, I came across a nice 64 velle with a big block, working cowl hood. It was white with red interior. Was the car there this year? Congrats on your award!

October 4, there is a nice show at the Sidney, NY airport, about 400 cars. It is usually my last cruise of the year, weather permitting I will be there with a couple of other chevelles.

Almost every 64/65 I looked at when shopping for my car had rust issues. And this was before people went to significant panel and floor reconstruction as they do today to save a rust bucket. Perhaps this is the reason you don't see as many 64/65's ? Maybe the rusty cars were just junked? I don't know if the rust problem is as bad or common in other Chevelle years.

Can you imagine then i've got myself a four door 65 in 70/75% condition?, with the factory low end 194/3 still equipped, the rust on the 65 isn't as worse as on other model years, I think what someone said ealier it was a 70's demand for low weight cars for local races should cover the most of it.

But the thing still drives as a charm with the only issues being a stubborn clock.

I also agree that most people think only 66 and up Big Block cars as Muscle cars and the 64-65 cars were left out and junked for many years.

I like the idea that the 64-65 are the rarer generation. I like mine just that much better since there are not as many as the other SS big block cars.

I can cruise anywhere, get decent fuel mileage and go to the track and run decent numbers with my 327. I am happy.

I didn't spot that car. I didn't make my way around to all the cars. They had cars parked all over the place with a record turn out.
I have been to the Sidney show the last 4 years, and plan on being there Sunday. This is one of my favorites. I would say they average around 5 of the 64/65s at this show.

Went to the 10th annual Cruise for the Cure show in Southern CA over the weekend, about 3500 cars. Surprisingly there we maybe 15, 65's. Just about everything you could imagine was at that show and many of them. Lots of 67's, but did not see even one 66.

Awesome car! Is that a ram horn exhaust manifold I'm seeing on the driver side? If so is that correct? I'm thinking it must be with the national awards displayed on the grille.
