I'm new to the site and just bought a 65 SS convertible. It has a Cragar style wheel on it but no name on the outside of the wheel. I have been reading the posts and am not sure where to measure the wheel width. It has 225/70R15 Tires on it. I have very little gap between the outer fender and get a slight rub on turns, and more so when I have someone in the car. Is the width measured at the bead area or the outer lip of the wheel? I don't mind going down a couple of tire sizes. The front tires are 205/70R15 so a smaller tire will probably level the car out some.I will take a photo of the wheels to send along later if anyone can identify the wheel. Any suggestions are appriciated, thanks Chuck

Wheels are measured Bead to Bead , where the Tire adheres to, by the Mfgr

What your Problem is the Frontend is likely Lower than Stock Ride Height
and the BackSpace of the Wheel is not Deep enough

I lowered my 67 and had to buy New Wheels with a greater BS and Skinnyer / Lower Diameter Tires
this is before the New Wheels and Tires and they would Rub at Max Turn
15"x 7" BS 3.50” P205/75R15 – TreadWidth 6.25” /SideWallsWidth 8"/ Dia 27.1"
712226

Went to these Wheels /Tire Combo and NO more Rubbing at Max turn
15"x 7" BS 4” P205/70R15 – TreadWidth 5.59” /SideWallsWidth 8"/ Dia 26.28"

The front end is lower. I thought is was due to the smaller tires and not sure if they used drop spindles when they installed the disc brakes. Is the Offset measured from where the wheel mounts to the rotor/drum to the outside of the wheel? I think is would be cheaper to change the tire size to get more clearance in the rear wheel opening. Maybe try a bigger tire on the frontend to raise the car a bit..
Thanks for coming back to my post.

Yes
Yes but usually we want Bigger Wider Tires in the Rear for more Traction for Racing
what is your Rear Wheel BackSpace and Current Tire Size ?
Also the Ride Height plays into it and the Width of your Rearend

Putting a Higher Diameter Tire would not help as it would mean the Tire
would be up into the Front FenderWell even more
I had to go to a Lower Diameter Tire plus more BackSpace on the Wheel
to Stop the Rubbing at Max Turning

How To Measure Your Car's Wheel Wells plus the Drawing in Post # 3

Did you see this Thread about BackSpace and Offsat
Offset & Backspace - How Do They Relate?

To Measure the BackSpace of a Wheel you have to take it off the Car
then put it Face Down on the Ground, which Exposes the Backside of the Wheel / Tire Combo
Lay a short piece of 2x4 or anything that is Flat across the Rim of the Wheel from one side to the other
then take the Measurement from the Mounting Surface of the Wheel that would go against the Hub
to the underside of the 2x4 that is just sitting on the Wheel Rim
this/that is the BackSpace of the Wheel

That is correct, HOWEVER, don't do what some people do, and confuse back spacing and offset. They're two completely different measurements.
