Up till now I have had the tach mounted on the bottom of the dash below the radio. It was alright there for everyday driving as I usually am just cruising. After going to the track for the first time a couple of weeks ago I realize that just isn't going to cut it. Where have you guys mounted yours? I suppose I can put it on the steering column but that really isn't ideal either but it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb there. Any creative ideas out there fellas? By the way this is for my 65

I dont have one yet, but I might just go for a stock cluster with tach for cruising, and mount a shift light somewhere..on my 69 there is a vent just to the left of the steering wheel..I would love to hide a shift light in there to keep a stock look, but when it was time to race I am sure I'd be able to see it light up, even out of the vent.

I second what ZZ69chevelle suggested. I recently moved my tach to the underdash position you spoke of. I have the ability to move the shift light to the column. I feel it gives my interior a "cleaner" look.

Gerry, being an old guy I needed something I could read easily and not look added on in my Stock Interior 66 so I went with a combo LED tach / shift lite by Stewart Warner ..... since it about 1 1/4' in diameter and comes with paintable case I painted it dash color and mounted it to the A-pillar level with the dash pad, just kinda wedged in there ........ you barely see it from the outside and it is angled right at me.... rpm in red led and shift lites in amber, my original 66 knee knocker tach still in operation ....works for me I'm surprised not more of these used, Bill

I've got both of mine on the column.

And to tell the truth a shift light is the way to go.
Both of my Chevelles have Autometer monster tachs with the shift light.

When your making sure your going straight, its almost too much to read the tach, its nice to just shift when the light comes on.

I really only use the tach to judge my speed on the the street.

Thanks guys. The separate shift light idea on the column is a pretty good idea. As CDNSS said, us old guys need something that is easy to read. I Didn't realize you could even get a stand alone shift light. I don't really like things that don't belong if you know my meaning. On the pillar would be the best for me but I just don't want the tach hanging there. I am also looking at alternatives to my 3 guages below the dash for oil, temp, volts. Something that can be a little less obvious but still functional.

I mounted mine right on the a pillar. It is a ~3" Competition series Autometer. It isn't in the way and i can see it just fine when driving. I use to have mine below the dash also not that great. I just utilzed one of the screws for the mounting of the a-pillar pad and just got a longer screw. Only thing is i am still not to use to it being there and i still bump my head on it sometimes when i am doing something in my car, not getting in and out but just sticking my head in to look @ something or whatever.

I agree with everyone on the shift-light idea.Mount the tach where ever you like it and put in the light. If you are running any kind of quik time at the track you won't have time to be looking at the tach anyway.

Mounted on the column. I have yet to go to the track, but I like being able to see the tach. Yea, the shift light is probably better for repeatability, but I don't like the way it looks. Also, I don't like the tachs with the built in shift light. But that's just MHO.

Jerry, I have a 65 also and I mounted mine like big bubba did. I had mine on the column in front of the clock and I found that the tach light cast a reflection onto the windshield during night driving, right about eyesite level. Really annoying and definately not safe! I spent some time modifying the cluster to accept the tach, but it was worth it in the end.

Added pics.

For my 65 hardtop I had (now have 65 SS Vert) I bought a Sun Super Tach, took the chrome bezel and lens off, and mounted it right where the stock tach/clock would go in from behind in the center hole on the instrument panel. I made a backing plate that used the same screw holes as the clock did. Looked good, and didn't require hacking anything.

Nice job Jeff, that looks great. I am going to have to look at that option. My Beau dash layout is quite different than the chevelle but maybe I can look at replacing the clock with a tach. If I do that I think I will still maybe put a shift light into the scenario somewhere where this old fart can easily see it.
Appreciate the help guys
