First trip to the dyno after installing the new motor from Mike, snapped off an ear and cracked the case (in another location) during 3 wot pulls. Sold the TKO 600 to a friend for parts and bought a G force.

The tko was an off the shelf unit. Not the beefed up version referred to here - but if they don't replace the case, too - it will continue to be the weak link, imo.

these tq ratings for transmissions seem like more of a marketing gimic than anything. ask them if they warranty it within that power level.

i have seen heard of some guys with the race prepped TKOs but I hear that shifting become notchier, so perhaps another good question to ask.

When it comes to engines and transmissions, isn`t it all about marketing? Bigger is better right? We always want the biggest and baddest "thing" on the block. It`s just a guy thing. That`s why there are companies out there that overrate the torque capacity of transmissions or other driveline related items.

We could do the same thing. Bottom line? A TKO 600 out of the box carries a 600 lb. ft. rating based on a 5000 lb. vehicle weight. We have hundreds of guys running 800-1000 hp through these units on street cars and yes, we do warranty them.

As far as shifting, the TKO`s upper limit is around 6500 rpms. This is due to the synchronizers spinning so fast they cannot engage. However, I have seen cars where guys are able to shift at 7k on a stock box. The next step would be to remove every other tooth from the synchros and open up the shift window to 7k or a little better. This service along with upgraded shift pads can be done for under $400.

The more synchro mods you do the clunkier the box will get. The service mentioned above would have a minimal effect. I rode in a badass faceplated "dogbox" T56 yesterday and it was pretty clunky. But, you could bang the gears upshifting and downshifting and never miss a gear without touching the clutch pedal...

As with anything, do your homework, talk to people and form your own opinion.

Jeff, great info. We do often get caught in the marketing traps .

Are you guys really just up the road in Tenn? I didn't realize that. I'm planning a coupe Fox body LSx project that may have TKO 600 written all over it based on your info :D

Yep, we`re just 15 minutes outside downtown Knoxville in Blount County. Stop by so we can chat about your project and show you the place. :D

Quick question when installing the trans did you get it to the bell surface or was it a little tough and you used the bolts to suck it up?

No way! Transmission install 101. Never use the ears to seat the input shaft in the pilot bearing. It was either a faulty casting or just too much tq. The motor makes 700 vs the 600 rating. It also cracked in a completely different location.

I decided to give it a try since I already owned the tko when the motor got here and I'd heard about guys with 1000 hp motors using them off the shelf. They either got really lucky or I'm really unlucky, imo.

I like the transmission alot, but for my money, I'd get something alot beefier north of 600 ft lbs just to be safe. This stuff is too expensive to gamble, imo.
