ok guys, im looking for all of these pipe plugs for a Dart M block (big block)...

so far, i count 13:

three near the rear cam seal,
three near the front cam seal/timing cover,
one on each side near the main caps of cylinders 5 and 6 (2 total).
Then there are 2 holes near where the front of the intake manifold sits (right inside of the block) and one of those is a tiny little thing.
Then there are 2 more near the top of the bellhousing bolt holes right behind the intake manifold back ledge.
Then, there is one near the oil filter.

Am i missing any?????

So, the one by the oil filter is for my oil pressure gauge, right? (my adapter is too small....)

I figure that most of these holes are for plugs with the allen wrench centers, but i also have 2 hex head plugs. what are those for/where do they go?

thanks gentlemen,

i need a beer

Let us know how the one fits in the end of the main oil gallery in the bellhousing area. Right behind flywheel and beside cam bore.

We have a new Dart Big M that seems is threaded a little weird. Plugs go way deep into the hole and don't really seal or tighten easily. Going to have to do some fancy work to fix it.

Hell, I don't know, I don't count them I just plug them,,,, :D
Use one of the ones on the bellhousing for oil pressure, this is the main oil galley
I use the smaller one but either works, the larger one was put there as another input from a dry sump, external wet or a remote filter setup if you wanted to use it.

Use the hex for water plugs.

Hi Jim,
I know what block you are doing
I can't believe he hasn't ran off screaming into the hills by now :D :D

That almost has to be because some dummy tapped it to deep & I can almost guarantee it was not Dart.
They don't finish tap the pipe threads, I think they use a straight tap so they do not break them in the CNC machine
Every block I have done, both big & small, I have had to finish the pipe threads or the plugs only go in about two threads.

thanks guys,

Jim, ill let you know how my plugs go in.

Mike, as far as the hex bolts in the water jacket at the bottom of the block, how far do the bolts go in? does the head end up flush with the block?

i plan on putting RTV on all these plugs too... is that ok?

thanks

There's also a large pipe plug that goes into the bottom of the fuel pump boss.
I didn't have any trouble threading my plugs, I guess my machinist must have checked / chased all the threads. I put brass drains in the two holes at the side of the block ( cyl 5 & 6).

Yep Mike....I told him to call you and ask. This motor just never wants to get done. When it was first built by the *other guy* I never noticed any leaks on the dyno. Either time...before it died!

So this time it goes to new machine shop and gets re-bored etc, they assemble shortblock, etc etc. When we are sticking the rest together we notice the plug looks awful deep. Hmmmnnnn..........of course we notice it after we are pretty deep into project. Then when we prelube it..it leaks!

I have no idea why people do stuff like this!! He hasn't spared much $$ on this dude and has been doing his best to get it all right. But faith in some machine shops is running low!

BTW-I sent Steve to you for lifters and stuff. He was really happy working with you. I guess you've heard the rest of the story........

See ya,

JIM
