I really like the wheel and tire set up on this 68. It's just perfect IMO.

I know they are 15" wheels. I know that the front tires are 225/60/15 and the rear tires are 255/60/15. What I am trying to determine is the wheel widths and back space.

I am leaning towards the fronts being 15x8 with either a 4.5" or maybe 5" and the rears being 15x10 with either 5" or 5.5".

Wheel vintiques sells 15x8 in a 4.5" BS and 5" BS, and they sell the 15x10 in a 5.50 BS.

Do not know what Year of a Chevelle you are wanting to put Wheels/Tires Combo on
as you do not say

This is the only way you are going to know what Wheel/Tire Combo will work for your Car

thank you, I I will do that. I appreciate the link.

Here is my 68 running. 15x8 w/ 4.5 bs rear 275/60/15 front 235/60/15.

It's hard to know without being able to measure the black 68. I called the company that sold that black one, and they could tell me everything but the backspacing.

  • Find the center of each tire and mark it with white chalk.
  • Measure the max amount of back space that will not rub against anything while keeping it as close to the center line of the car..
  • Measure the distance between the two rear tires and the two front tires wheels steered straight ahead.
  • Using the back space, make center of both front and rear wheels the same while using the maximum amount of back space.. Keeping both front and rear wheels centered and closest to the cars center line..

Very Nice looking 68
reminds me of the one my Dad ordered from the Dealership in1967
but he never got it because a Salesman sold it to someone else
before Dad could go to the Dealership to pick it up

So both Wheel/Tire Combos look like they need more BackSpace
tf you have a Stock Width RearEnd of 61"

Check the Room on the REAR between the current Tire's Side Wall at the OUTside/Fender Lip
and the Room between the current Tire's Side Wall at the INside/Frame
Since you already know that the Rear 8" Wide Wheel has a 4.5" BackSpace
there should be more Room on the INside of ??" so a 4.75" to 5" BS on a 8" Wide Wheel should work
to provide more Room on the OUTside/Fender Lip for when you go to Fast around Corners

To me it looks like the Front Wheel/Tire Combo only has a 3.5" to 3.75" BS
and the Tire is really close to the Fender Lip plus might be Rubbing
or very close to Rubbing when you are at Max Turning

Depending on the FRONT Wheel Width you will need either more BS or a Tire with less Height/Diameter

Here are Pics of my 67 which has a 60" Wide RearEnd / Face of Wheel Mounting Hub of Drum Brakes to ......
FRONT has been Lowered from Stock Ride Height of 27" from Ground to under Chrome Fender Lip
to 25.5" = 1.5" Drop
Wheel = JEGs Sport Star # 555-66062 15x7 BS 4”
Tire = COOPER StarFire P205/70R15 – TreadWidth 5.59” /SideWallsWidth 8"/ Dia 26.28"

REAR which is Stock Ride Height of 26"
Wheel = JEGs Sport Star # 555-67072/66086 1pce Alum356alloy 15”x10” BS= 5.50”
Tire = M/T ET Street S/S # 3454 295/55/15 = 10.6” Tread Width / 12.2” SWW / 27.8” Dia..

Very Nice looking 68...
Thanks man! Real good looking 67! Also appreciate all of the info.

I can confirm that the ralley's on the car are all 4.5 BS, I know because I bought them, but I agree, all of the wheels look like they are pushed out. I also am running 2" lowering springs in the front and I think the rear is 1" lower. The rear end is stock width.

I'll do all of my measuring and follow up on this thread.

If 8" Wide Wheels in Front with the 4.5" BackSpace then more BackSpace could be used
if there is NO interference of the current Tire on the INside Frams/Tie Rods etc. when at Max Turn
easier to just get a Lower Diameter/Width Tire or go with a 7" to 6" Wide Wheel

Let us know what the Measuring #s are .

Have you added disc brakes to the front? That adds a little width.
I like the tire sizes you have. They really look good on the car but I think you need a little more back space. The car in OP looks good too but I’d like more tire.
If you find steel wheels you like but can’t find the right offset, a good wheel shop can cut the rim loose from the center and reposition it where you’d like it.

Okay...yes, it has been converted to front disc brakes from a 73 Monte Carlo I believe. The previous owner did it.

That 225/50/15 is a really small tire. I can see you hitting everything driving down the road.

I've seen people run everything from a 255 up to a 295 on a 10" Rim. The narrow widths definitely effect the performance of the tire, but some people just go for the looks I guess. The 295 is ideal, but my 275 should work for a while...they only have like 2000 miles on them, so I'd like to get some of my money back out of them before I switch to a different tire.

whoops, that's a typo, meant 225/60/15 I'll fix it.
In that case you should be good to go. For reference I am using 235/60/15 all the way around. Kinda wished I went with 245/60/15's all around. I like to be able to rotate my tires but I do also like the staggered look too. I think 235/60's and the 275's on a 8 inch would look great but sure 255's is also a good combo. 245 is the largest you can go on a 7 inch and look good.

I don't know if you saw my picture, but that is what I am running. Front 235/60 and Rear 275/60 on 15x8 with 4.5 inch backspacing. My front wheels look like they are a bit too far pushed out to me.

As I said in my # 9 Post
and the fact that you have Disc Brakes on the Front that would have pushed the Wheel/Tire Combo
to the OUTside/Fender Lip
So again there are ways to change the Front look etc
1. Smaller Diameter/Width Tire
2. Less Wide Wheel eg. 7" or 6" with the Right BackSpace
3. If possible more BS on a 8" Wide Wheel if there is Room/Space that will not Result in any Rubbing
on the INside Frame/Tie Rods etc.

On the Rear # s 1. / 2 / 3 minus the Tie Rods

Thank you again, I haven't completed my homework yet. I am coming to the end of an engine and transmission replacement. I should be dropping it in tomorrow, and then getting these wheels sorted will be next. So, I'm still planning on learning to do this the right way and taking the measurements.

I actually have a set of pair of 15x7 and 15x6 rallies that I will be able to play around with on the front, so I am going to swap those on and see what she looks like. I am not sure what the backspace is on those wheels, but I know how to measure it.
