Wheel Backspacing '66 SS

I have a friend who also owns a '66. His back wheels are 10". The biggest I could make fit under mine were 8" rallies. He swears there are no modifications done to his wheel wells. Does anyone know how he done this? He bought the car with the wheels on it. It's not where I can look at the car, he sent me pictures, but I can't tell.

I have Nitto 555 P285/40ZR-17 on 17x9.5 Fikse Profil 5S wheels with 5.625" (5-5/8") back spacing on the rear of my 65 El Camino and they fit just fine. I had planned on 17x10 with 5-7/8" B.S. originally but ultimately decided against it. I have no rubbing/interference issues at all even under hard cornering.
