I just want to get an idea of how much my 396 could make, I know its definitely not making past 500. I don't know the engine year, if it rebuilt or anything, was another mans project and he wont answer the phone.

OP....oval ports with some bowl work, a 270 tyoe cam, headers would spice it up a bunch still sound stockish but have a nice bumpe in torque. Stock converter

I have learned that the block in my SS396 (1969) is from a 1 year only 265 HP version of the 396 with a 2 barrel carb. Both the car and the block were built in the 4th week of January of 69 but I am certain that SS cars never had this engine. My question is, could it have been used in a truck...

Where under the car will you be expecting to find a clue that will allow you to identify your engine?

so are some late year 1969 396 engines with 3-letter engine codes
they are also called 402 in chevelles and 400 in pickups

The lowest horsepower a running 396 can make is about 20, any lower and it dies. Now what your engine makes is probable at 350, with engine running fair and mostly stock.
