I have a small oil leak that seems to be coming from behind the oil pan, almost from the fly wheel cover. It's not ATF, its dirty oil, so what all is involved in replacing it? Everything is in the car, so would the transmission have to be removed? if so, i might as well get a better torque converter.

Watcha think?

Brandon, it depends on if you have a 1 piece seal (newer 350) or a 2 piece seal like your
original engine came with....newer 1 piece will require removeing trans. 2 piece seal will require removeing your oil pan and the rear main bearing cap...

Regardless of the style of rear main seal, you'll end up pulling the motor out of the car. With a two-piece seal it can sometimes be done in the vehicle but it would be more dangerous and take a lot longer than just pulling the engine in the first place.

Here is how you do a 2-piece crank seal block.

You jack the engine up and place short 2x4's between the rubber mounts and the frame stands for safety! Say 4" high after pulling the dizzy..

You need to clock the damper to 5 or 6 o-clock so that the front counterweights are rotated up out of the way, then you pull the pan and then loosen the mains so that you can drop the crank down just a bitty schosh so that you can spin in a new top seal and stagger it's ends like 3/16" here. Then install the bottom seal and daub on a schosh of good old Indianhead both on the ends and in the groove.

Tighten the mains back tight, put the pan back on, remove the blocks of wood, drop her down and go!!

And 1/4" tools really work good under her until you get to the main bolts!!

Don't forget that the seal lips go towards the FRONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He, he!!

You should try to tighten up a "rope seal"..

Well, i looked in the back of the intake, and it looks like the oil sending unit may be the culprit. It was wet oil all over the back of the block, running down the right side of the tranny. I tightened it up, cleaned everything up, and low and behold, i found my blocks casting numbers! lol

We'll see what happens!
