I am on the verge of building a 383 for my 72 chevelle. I drive it at least three times a week to and from work and net at least 100 miles a week on it. My 350 is a little tired so I decided to build this. 1997 Vortec block, reusing roller lifters. stroke it out to 383, vortec heads machined for GM hot cam, 10 to 1 compression, eddy dual plane intake, 770 street avenger. I am just wondering if I should go with a dual grind cam to get better exhaust flow for the heads, i know the intake is great but the exaust not as good. Is the compressions to high for pump gas? Carb opinions? lifter opinions? All opinions and criticism please. The rest of my drive train is 700R4 1900 stall, 3.55 posi, 26 inch tire.

I want to build this combo and have better performance than most foriegn vehicles. Right now I have 350, vortecs, 650 eddy carb, headers, hei, and same tranny and gears and I still lost a race to a V6 eclipse. How does that happen. I have done all I can in tuning to get the most out of it but I think the best I can get is 14s in the quarter. I'm just bummed a 200 horsepower eclipse can beat my supposedly "muscle car" chevelle.

I have not taken it to the track yet but am planning on it. The cam is a 268h comp cam with .454 max lift. I had this cam in my engine before I had the 3.55 gears or vortec heads. It was a dog with the stock 78cc heads, 2.73 gears. The timing is at 16 degrees initial and 32 degrees total.

For your combo I would chose a single pattern. Vortec's love big dur cams also.

100 miles a week?-no big deal IMO.... I would ditch the overdrive trans, use some better gears like 4.10's with 29 inch tall tires, or 3.73's with 27 or 28" tall tires. A tight 3000 stall converter. A much larger cam [email protected] .050 with good springs. Make it run hard, the $$ difference in MPG for 100 miles per week isn't much IMO. I know of nobody in this area that's had good luck with the 700R4 when pounded on regularly.

The Eclips beat you because it's about power to wt ratio, that car simply had less wt per hp to move then your tired 350 did.

And btw dont bet on the 10:1 383 running on mid grade fuel as suggested unless your running a lot of cam ,it will likely need premium 93 fuel as already suggested if your running a full perf ign curve.
