well I am making 400 at the wheels in my TA with a 4l60e(basically the samejust electronic) but the MAJOR key is to find someone who know what they are doing not just stacking clutches in and be done with it,actually need to measure the clearence between the disc and put them as tight as possable. now for parts just buy some good clutches, I am just using the bogwarner like OEM and a beast sunshell, vet servo. and just find a good builder. I went through 4 tranny before I found a good 1, 1 I had built it lasted 2 days and burnt the clutches so bad it turned the pad and steel black. and also if this one has the cable make sure it is adj right this controls the line pressure. BUT THE MAIN THING FIND A GOOD BUILDER......

and a good build should cost less than 800$ for a bench job and parts. I think the sunshell is only like 50$

I build transmissions and I wouldn't touch a 700 for $800.
To build it right it cost over $400 in parts at wholesale.
Build it and warranty it for another $300...don't expect much for that...

The 700R4 will work pretty good in a heavy Jimmy with a toruqey 383, however plan on going through it every 2-3 years.

Better make sure a builder installs these parts:

Code Product Quantity Price/Ea. Total
74009A-BS Super Master kit, 700R4, 1985-86 $120.00 $120.00
N74020C Band 700 / 4L60E Power Band - Red Eagle $23.10 $23.10
74030E Bushing kit, 700-R4 / 4L60E L1984-UP $13.10 $13.10
74300F Pan Gasket: 700R4 / 4L60E $2.08 $2.08
A74658B Sprag, 700R4 / 4L60 / 4L60E Forward, SILVER caps, 1986-UP $40.62 $40.62
54425B Solenoid, Lock-Up, 4L60 / 4L60E / 200-4R Universal 1982-UP $15.48 $15.48
74200 Thrust washer kit, 700R4 / 4L60E $11.53 $11.53
T74171 TransGo Reprogramming Kit 700R4 / 4L60 $81.29 $81.29
A74624A Shell, The Beast , Sun gear Shell *ON SPECIAL $49.50 $49.50
A74507TK Boost Valve assembly, 700R4, .500 inch, O ring type $9.50 $9.50
A74531AK Pump Rotor kit, 700R4 / 4L60E, 10 vane $30.34 $30.34
T74165HP TransGo 700-R4 200-4R High Rev pump kit (over 5500 rpm) $8.15 $8.15
S74507RDK Boost valve & bushing, REVERSE, 700R4 $19.65 $19.65
A74971K Hi-Rev Spring kit , 700 / 4L60E $27.20 $27.20
Total: $451.54

And you may still need a new reverse input drum, it must be in GOOD shape.
$100 new...

I could add a better 3-4 clutch pack onto this too, for a performance vehicle it is the major failure item. The stock Hi-Energy stuff is pretty good and has worked for me so far, but I avoid using a 700 behind a serious motor.

You can see a minimum of $450 in parts, and that is IF the builder is willing to sell parts at cost, usually markup at a trans shop is pretty steep.

Still gotta pay for overhead and labor.

Be very wary of $800 700-R4's.

without the help of my friends who own a trans shop. I would have had to pay $1200 for mine plus the $500 converter. Mine has koleen steels, sun shell, custom anchor kevalar bands, vette servo, boost valve, and much more. It's worth every penny to have 2000 RPM @ 70 MPH though.

My motor on the spray ( 150) makes 380 HP and 600 RWTQ. I have sprayed it with the 200 kit a few times too.

Depending on where your at there's some good shops around. I'm in IN. if your close to ud or look up DDW Automotive, Pro Automatic is another really good one.

I had a guy build my 700R4 for $1000. Had a converter core and last-year one, so it cost a little less. He is also a friend of a friend, so I may have gotten a break there too.

Jake,

So what you are saying is that the 700-R4(and convertor) I got from a transmission shop in Denver for $550.00 won't hold 600 ft-lbs like they told me it would???

Seriously, a buddy bought it and by the time I did some trading with him, I paid $350 for it and figured on going through it(and selling the unknown convertor to someone else). So, thanks for the parts list. By the way, where are these part #'s and prices from? Perhaps Bulkpart.com?

Anyway. I am thinking that with some well chosen upgrades, this trans will live a long time behind my 300HP small-block.

Thanks

No,
A $500 700-R4 would be questionable in a near stock application IMO...

I built one for a friend at cost for a mild 350 V8 powered S10 Blazer, and it was a little under $500.

It had the approximate parts list as above.

Yes,
Parts are at Bulkpart.

I had mine built and it ran $1600 including a newly built converter...I had it built for at least 600hp as I figure I am getting about 500-550 out of my 454...the place I went locally has a really good rep and the owner is an ex early NASCAR guy.....all my friends say he always stands behind his work...

Jake,

In your item list from bulkpart.com, you list these two items.

T74165HP TransGo 700-R4 200-4R High Rev pump kit (over 5500 rpm)

A74971K Hi-Rev Spring kit , 700 / 4L60E

Can you explain their function and benefit to me since I am a transmission newbie?

Thanks

Why not just build a 4L60 or 4L80 then? What would be the price difference between building a 700R4 versus a 4L60 with converter to handle 600hp?
