When the firewalls are initially stamped they have to take into account every possible combination of options that may need some sort of routing through the firewall or securing items to the firewall. The dents are where mounting holes or pass through holes may need to be drilled based on the car and its options. If you get a chance to look at a 69 Assembly Instruction Manual, UPC page 0, sheets A10 & A11 have what options use what holes.

Probably not all the dimples are possibly used during final assembly (purpose of the AIM); some may be used by Fisher during body assembly that wouldn't appear in the AIM.

There certainly are a bunch of them that never get used...;)
