My customer is building a 1966 Chevelle SS 396, and our shop is building him a 496 BBC. He wants an aluminum intake. He was thinking an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap, but I don't know if it will fit with a Holley and WHAT air filter, under a stock SS hood? Any thoughts? Or suggestions!

Tell him that ONLY a cast iron oval port GM intake is correct and It is the only thing that will really fit, and anything else will cause an operational and styling disaster, and besides that - those extra 100 cubic inches in that 496 are going to really crowd the underhood area! Why? OBVIOUSLY, because it was really only designed for a 396, O.K?

When he looks at you funny, deadpan say "I saw it on car warriors, man...I KNOW it's true"

p.s. lay a straightedge across the cylinder heads, bare - no valve covers. Measure up at the engine centerline.

Te TOTAL clearance is about 8", as measured at the carb centerline, when measuring from the top edge of the inner rail of the highest point of the valve cover gasket seating surface.

Note: this is on a stock BBC cast iron cylinder head, on a short deck BB in a car with stock motor mounts.

This allows NO fudge factor and NO allowance for torque reaction from the engine.

An Edelbrock Air Gap will fit under the stock 66 hood with no clearance issues if a drop base 3" x 14" air cleaner is used to top it off. I recently installed a ZZ502 in a 66 SS using an Air Gap replacing the stock ZZ alum one with no issues. and the air cleaner combo- no issues. By the way, the 496/502/454/427 (std. deck) /396 blocks are ALL externally identical in dimensions. Displacement difference does not change the external dimensions or fit. I have an Air Gap on my 496 under a stock 65 hood with that air cleaner with 1/2" clearance - it replaced a stock 163 manifold with the same installed height.. Ed

Yep... Short decks, all same. Tall decks blocks are a little, well...taller

Ed, I was JOKING in my first post...you know...making fun of those TV reality shows where mostly idiots disguised as experts attempt to build cars?

Maybe I wasn't obvious enough. Sorry

Sorry I missed your meaning. Maybe it wasn't quite ridiculous enough for a "reality" show with experts that never seem to have any grease under their nails! Even on this site, there are occasional ones. Where in the Deep South? Ed

Hi Ed,
Yeah, amazing how little work any of those bozos actually do.

Maybe just me, but I just don't get those shows.

Yep, I ALMOST missed it also, but when I read the last line, I got the meaning. ;)
