I am thinking about swapping from a 3.55 to a 3.08 gear set. Anyone running this set up? I have a 69 with a 454 around 450-500 horsepower 4 speed car. With 27 inch tires, car is not too friendly on the highway. Has all kinds of low end now. Its a sit and spin. I do not want to lose all of the low end. What do you think. If it matters I am a cruiser not a racer.

i had a set of 3.08's in the car when i first got it, with a hot 350 you could get about 65-70.mph out of first gear when it was twisted up.
same set-up did get good gas mileage on the highway 19mpg. :)

I have 3.08's in my 67 Elky. I can chirp 2nd gear with my stock 327 and th400. If you have low end torque, you'll fry your tires from now until next Tuesday. If you truly cruise, you'll watch your MPG go up and freeways will be more pleasant to drive on.

If you have a M-20 wide ratio 3-spd, the 3.07 gearset will still work for you.
I am not sure at all even a 454 with close ratio M21/22 with 3.07 gears...

FYI, my RatVette had 427 M-20 and 3.08 gears,,,,,it was a nice cruiser.
But I went a bit to the darkside a few years back, went to 3.36

I've run everything fron 2.73s to 4.56s in my 64. Currently it has 4.56s behind a healthy 427. With 3.08s and a 4 speed, you'll be slipping the clutch a bit more to get moving, but with BB torque, you'll still have all the get up and go you could want for a cruiser.

M-20 and 4.56's, wish i had 5.13's btw no cruising here. I wouldn't go any lower than 3.08's but if your looking to lower your rpms that'll work.

I had m20 with opt 307 gear in a 12 bolt posi with mild 396,was a good match,puller approx 2,450 rpm at 60mph with 25.5-26" tall tires.

I installed 331s for a little more fun and it now turns approx 2,650 rpms & 60mph with all else being the same. It does does in fact have a more spunk when getting into it with the 331's even though it was small change in gear ratio.
