winters (somewhat) over and it’s time for me to bring my car back from sitting at my dads house. anything i need to do before driving it 25 miles back to my moms? should i add something to the gas? i saw the oil a month ago and it was charcoal black and felt like water but his girlfriend probably wouldn’t want me changing my oil in her driveway so i’ll have to do it when i get home, is there anything i can add to the oil that’ll help it not tear up the engine? i’ll make sure to check the brake fluid, power steering, and radiator fluid aswell. i won’t be able to change it but if it needs to be topped off i will.

Turn the key and go to the gas station and fill up with fresh fuel.
Does the oil have viscosity? Does it smell like gas? How long has the oil been in the car? 3 Months is not a long time to sit. Mine sit that long, I start up and drive.
Check the fluids and fire it up .
It's a chevy

Pulling? or Driving? if you're going to start the engine and drive it check to see if gas is in the oil by pulling the dipstick like said, if it smells like gas sweet talk dads Gfriend into letting you do an oil change, get it home and check the carb, if pulling put it in neutral :D or take the DS out, and Id be using non eth gas

Tell her you can change the oil with out making a mess. Then be neat and change it when she's gone. Put some plastic down too. Should have done it before you put it to bed. Fire it up and let it warm up good. Hope you had antifreeze in it when you put it away.

You should have put StaBil in the Gas Tank when you parked it 3 Months ago
and
the Percentage of Anti Freeze should have been increased so the Water in the Engine Block would not Freeze

Dirty Black Oil usually means OLD Oil in a Old Engine that needs looking into/tore down/rebuilt
also if the Oil smells like Gas OR it smells Sweet you might have Anti Freeze in it

You should change the Oil & Filter if either of those things are applicable BEFORE you start the Car

So if you plan on Driving/Starting it now then look to plan on pulling the Engine for a Major $$ Rebuild
IMHO

Arent you in Michigan? There is plenty of winter left. As already said hope your antifreeze was up to snuff before you parked that car. If you have no idea remove the radiator cap and see what it looks like. If frozen do not start car. If nice and green go ahead and start it. As said go fill up with fresh gas and dump a bottle of stabil in the tank. If the oil is dirty you would actually be better off changing the oil after you get to where you are going to repark the car. When the oil is warm it drains out easier. Your engine should hold five quarts with a filter. Fill the new filter up with fresh oil before you install it. That will prevent dry start up. New filter goes on till gasket makes contact with block and then maybe anther half rotation or so. They only need to be tight enough that they dont leak or back off. Start car up after changing oil and filter and look underneath for ten seconds or so. Make sure new oil is not leaking.

Yes batteries that have low or no charge can and will freeze. then the plates can be bent and when charging short out.
Fluids need to be checked and topped up. Oil drained and filter changed and as said fill filter so it has oil in it...also wipe a little on the rubber gasket on the filter so it doesn't catch on the block and tear due to cold...Warm engine up and check fluids again..drive home...use brakes at slow speeds to see if spongy...if so could be water or air in lines...look at wheel on the inside of the wheel to see if there are drip marks from leaky wheel cylinders. Oil change won't even hurt her driveway but plastic or cardboard would be a nice gesture...then when home check the oil again...If it does have gasoline in it it may need work like rings a hone or worse yet rebuild...
Put your baby away safe and snug...with new fluids and topped up...battery out in a warm place and you won't have any problems when you go to start up in the new season...
Good luck...

I like your wishful thinking thinking winter is somewhat over, We still have at least a couple months left up here.
Everything everyone one has said above. But right now is a perfect time to do a pm on your car, pull the tires and check all the brakes, wheel cylinders calipers and don't forget to grab thoughs rubber brake lines and check for cracks. While the car is up in the air with Jack stands crawl under and ck the metal fuel and brake lines for heavy pitting or leaks, same with the rubber fuel line at the tank and fuel pump.

You probably want to get the engine up to Op temp anyway and burn off any condensation in the crankcase. Then drain and change. @ 25 miles is just about perfect!

you guys really like to make a lot of work out of nothing. its a old chevy not some priceless brass era car. do you think car dealers do any of this for a car that has been sitting on the lot for months or even years. three months is nothing

I don't know KeithB, The OP asked for some input and got a lot of good suggestions, the car could be really important to him. I'm sure he appreciates some helpful information to put him at ease.

check fluids, do a brake check, a quick visual check, fire it up. let it warm up, check for leaks, and drive off. seems simple
