If you see a Black 70 El Camino at CB08 I will show you my hidden gauges.
A lot of shows do not allow any MODS if you are stock so I hid mine !

There was a guy on here that hid an digital gauge behind the 8-track faceplate. He removed the guts, kept the faceplate, and the gauge would show through when the car was on.

I thought it was a great idea - sorry, couldn't find it again, but he had a pic of it.

For me, it depends on the car...

For my '66 (and my previous '66), I had the stock gauges in the dash.

On my "new" '70, I am planning on Classic Instruments guages (rather than Autometer), and placing them inside/behind a stock "SS/round pod" dash bezel (currently has the Malibu Sweep with add-on tach/guages)... The style of gugae will have a color/font similar to original (greenish numerals on a black background). Just a subtle, and more accurate custom touch...

I am looking at a quantity of three 3-3/8" guages; Speedo, Tach and a "Quad" cluster (oil press, water temp, Volt and Fuel level, all in one guage). I'll leave the small "holes" empty for now... Wouldn't mind a trans temp and maby a clock, but I don't think they are readily available in the size/line I want...

Heres what I did with my SS gauges. I did away with one of my idiot lights and mounted my shift light in the hole, the lense on the shift light is now blue instead of amber.

I have already done exactly what you are looking to do. Search around for "White Face Guages" . The Moderator of the Interior section of the forumposted pictures of my guages / dash about 1.5 years ago. I filled all the small guage holes with Classic guages. I used an oil temp and a clock, tach speedo and a Quad unit from Classic. Guages are mountedbehind the factory plastic lense and I utilize the small holes for signal lights and barake warning just as the factory did.
